Im starting to build my rig up a bit with swapping the axles. I've been told an 8.8 and HP30 should be fine if done correctly. I already have found the 8.8. my questions are: I have a XJ HP30 disco axle sitting at the house, could i just weld the hole where the vacuum goes and use normal shafts? would my 4WD still work the same?

Yep, you can remove the disco box thang and put in a solid shaft. I believe there's a different axle seal you'll need, but I can't remember the details on that. I'm sure someone else here will know. Your 4wd will work the same.

What's wrong with the D30 already in your ZJ?

Have any questions on the 8.8 swap?

okay cool thanks Chris! and nothing is wrong just upgrading, i have the LP30 and want something beefy and i can still use my aussie in it. Picking up the 8.8 hopefully tomorrow if not Thursday, but as of now not really any ?'s on the 8.8. is there anything i should look out for?

It's a pretty easy swap in an XJ. Haven't done a ZJ yet, but I bet it's no more difficult. Just make sure when you put the calipers back on you have them on the correct sides. The bleeder valve should be at the top of the caliper.

RE:8.8

Hold out for one with disc brakes. Make sure it's complete. Weld the tubes to the chunk. If you want to put in a locker make sure to get one that does not have limited slip.

alright thanks! andGubNi: the picture he sent me shows the that they are discs and its complete, but it is a limited slip, however i can easily get a regular non-Limited slip carrier to put in it. I dont think that i will be locking it until after i have the project done.

RE: D30. Pick up some TJ alloy shafts with 297x joints. Pull axle disco, inner shaft and oil seal on hub side of disco housing. pull your carrier (be sure to keep all the shims in order), at the passenger side axle tube (in the carrier) install a new seal (I think it's a CarQuest 712008 or measure and have your shop pull a few off the shelf). reinstall carrier. make cover plate or gut disco, install. Install shafts and you are good to go.

Like GubNi said, don't get the limited slip if you can help it. You will have to get a carrier plus you will have to set up the gears again. I'd rather get one with matching gears as the front you are going to use without the limited slip unless you are planning to regear them anyway.

Hey man not to hijack your thread or anything but let me know who you get to set up your 8.8, unless your doing it yourself. I will be putting one in my TJ towards the end of the year and the only place ive found to get one set up is ECGS and its 625$ for the base one plus all the shit I want is well over a grand which is well over my college budget haha. Keep us updated on how the swap goes

JC how;s the shark doing? or is it the whale? cant remember. I've already planned to keep the limited slip until next summer... this project will drain my wallet! haha I dont really mind it. and if/when i re-gear it will be the end of next summer unless i hit an awesome deal haha.

Snakester14: I plan to save as much as possible on this build, I am like 95% positive i will be doing this myself only because i dont have alot to weld. only Clayton's 4-link truss, and the coil spring buckets and lower HD CA mounts. but i'd love to help you out as well when i get done with the sway if you'd like.

Cool man I appreciate it. I wasn't planning on being able to even mess with an 8.8 till the end of this coming school year. But I can get one for 125$ near ECU where I go to school and if I can get someone to weld it up for me for fairly cheap I could throw one in sooner.

Frame stiffeners?

ECGs price on the 8.8 is a good one, We have built a few and by the time you put it all together it will be around a $900.

So the $1000 for one that bolts in is a deal.

You will see what I am saying when you go to adding up all the things your going to need to do the swap.

Yea I'm still leaning towards ECGS because I like the idea of picking an 8.8 and just installing it and not having to deal with any thing else haha. Def. worth the little extra coin for someone who doesn't have fab skills like myself but we will see what I do when the time comes.

I put the question mark basically asking if you had thought about them. Those require a lot of welding, and welding thick plate to thin uni is rough, so make sure you have an experienced welder do it.

Yes you will need them.

I have, and I'll be going with claytons' stiffeners. As for the welding part my dad's buisness partner is an amazing welder and I will be asking him for some help for sure! Haha
