Hurrican Creek Trip. Saturday 3/15

Attention all WNC wheelers! There is a group going to do some wheeling in Hurricane Creek and in Harmon's Den through the Cherokee national forest. There is beautiful land with tons of awesome legal trails. If you're interested, we're meeting at the Ingles on Leicester highway at 11AM on Saturday.

I hear ya! As far as I know, other than hurricane creek, these trail aren't very well known. I had never heard them mentioned in a forum or anything. A buddy took me down a few a little while back. Being just down the road from hurricane creek, there's tons of miles of rugged trails with creek crossings. It should be a lot of fun.
 
I've never been to Shelton laurel or exit 7. I didn't know there were any off-road trails through there. I have done some pretty good trout fishing in Shelton laurel though!
 
There is one off exit 7 that goes into TN and comes back out at the first exit in TN. The one off Shelton Laurel is pretty short.
 
That's what I've been told. I have only been to the NC side. Never actually been down the trail. Lol.
 
We had a blast! We didn't have a huge turnout as about 5 people bailed out. There were only three of us. We ended up hitting hurricane creek from the top of max patch and went down towards I-40. It's not a terribly rough trail. We ran into a stock grand Cherokee, and a stock frontier. A couple stock wranglers as well. Once we go to the bottom, we got on the interstate, got off at the Harmon den exit and went left on the 12 mile strip towards cataloochee. About half way up up that road, there was a little trail that veers off to the right. I've been down in on several occasions, but I'm not sure of the name of it. This trail is a little more difficult. parts of it are very rutty, rocky, sloped and really compact. There are two big mud pits about halfway through with no way around. One of which I got stuck in :( at the end up the trail, there's a creek crossing with some moderately sized rocks on the way down. That's the most difficult part of the trail. All three of us made it just fine :) I'll be posting pictures shortly.
 
OK sounds good, I'd like to see pictures.
I've been too hurricane creek before, just didn't know about the other trail.
I'll have to check it out sometime soon if I can find it.
When you say compact do you mean narrow? I drive a 80 series land cruiser would you think it will fit?
 
i dont know where this trail is that you mentioned but shelton laurel is private, and if the trail your talking about is where i think it is its in the park. my family had a cabin on the the 12 mile, when you turn left at the split at the end of the road it turns into park with in a couple hundred feet. turn right you come back out at the power plant. If you ended up in the park wheeling you would be in for some deep shit getting caught. not saying you were but the whole 12 mile strip is pretty much a boundary line between national park and national forest.
 
From what I have been told the trail off 12 mile is in the national forest and legal to be on. Shelton Laurel is private but the group I went with had permission to be up there.

I wasn't trying to be a dick or accusing anyone of anything, I just know the area and have never heard of the trail (not saying it isn't there), and the forest service is looking for really any reason to close hurricane creek after what happened last winter at Max patch.
 
You didn't come off as a dick. No worries. You are absolutely right to voice your concern.
 
alright just making sure like i said i live in haywood and go to hurricane creek all the time and if anyone that was in the group wants to go again just hit me up im always ready for a ride down there. as soon as my jeep is back together im gonna make another trip lol
