It's now the largest hurricane in Atlantic history.

This is going to be a big deal.

Thoughts and prayers going out to those in its path... but also a lot of morbid curiosity as to what a "storm of the century" is really going to look like.

round here Hatteras is getting the most damage, although the water is up 3-4' in new bern but should be going down. My folks were telling me they had 2' wind waves in adams creek. which is impressive since they are sheltered from the neuse river/pamlico sound.
 
Chicago NWS has issued a lakeshore flood advisory through Weds. Chicago!

Storm surge at Battery Park City is over 3ft at present, even though the storm is still 500mi away. It peaked at 4.2ft during Irene.

Im on one of the 2500 line crews sitting on standby all packed and ready to go at any time if that tells you how bad they expect this to be.
 
It was a nonstop parade of line trucks heading north on I-81 last night.

Up here in Maryland everybody is freaking out.
After growing up in NC I've been through my share of hurricanes, I've never seen warning and pre-prep like this. By mid-day they had everything closed for tomorrow, even Aberdeen Proving Ground (The army post where I work), they never close.

My lab is on Spesutie Island at APG, right on the bay. IIRC our building is either 6 or 8' above sea level... about 100' from the water... the highest point of the island... it's normal for the road out to it to flood, but they're preparing for complete flooding. Thank God our Branch bought a real server to keep all our data just last year that sits in a protected building w/ the HPSC, otherwise we could be royally screwed.

I've been telling Rachael I wanted a generator for a year... unfortunately I did too good a job proving my survival skills so she's convinced it's not so necessary... they've been literally selling 'em out of trucks up here but everything is gone.

Just heard they've even closed the NYC subway. Holy shit that must be causing havoc.

I'm waiting to hear where I have to go in the am. I'll be restoring sites for t-mobile somewhere between Norfolk and NYC...was told to pack for 10 days.

Could be interesting... Ive heard alot of nasty things. Hoping for the best, but think things will get really really bad.
 
Hope everyone is doing well out there. We have friends and family all along the east coast.

Been blowing a little snow near Asheville for an hour or so. Personally hoping to unhitch my pig and do some snow wheeling tomorrow!
 
Wow so they are in the process of *shutting down* I-95 and 40 at the bridge over the Susquehanna. Basically no traffic will be moving up that way shortly. Bay bridge already closed.
That's going to make things really fun for the line crews later, but 55+ mph winds across those bridges is sketchy at best!
The wind here at my house is really picking up.
 
Out of paranoia, I went out and filled up the doomsday Bronco with gas as well as 3 extra bronco gas tanks I had lying around, plus all my other vehicles...I don't wanna end up like cali was a few weeks back.

That said...the OL has been keeping me updated about the area we go out at the OBX...Pea Island Bridge is under water, amnd Jeanette's pier looks to be taking a beating...to the folks out in the Nags Head/Hatteras/KDH area...stay safe.
 
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! GodziWaaaa and he looks pissed cause it looks like a giant monster Seagull pooped on him.....................Who's idea was it to name the storm "Sandy" anyway??..............lots of stuff has and will be covered in sand by this storm. Good luck RatLabGuy and I think your wife might be onboard w the generator thing after this adventure!. I wish the best for all threatend by this monster of a storm.

Here's the biggest problem I have right now.
Thanks to years of conditioning... Every time I hear the word "Sandy"...
the next word that pops into my head is "vajayjay".
