HVAC Brand?

Goodman is a good unit. Goodman is one of the top manufacturers in the US and supplies a majority of the parts for the other names (Trane, Carrier, etc.).

Trane is good, but isn't top quality until you spend $$$$ on the top shelf Trane units or get commercial units. Cheap Trane units are the same as Goodman, Armstrong, etc.

Only complaint I've heard from Goodman is the fan is a little noisy. So, if its right outside of your bedroom window, maybe look for a unit with less db. The spec sheet should list operating db to compare. My Armstrong was quite, quieter than the Trane I replaced it with.

Do you have a split unit (compressor outside, air handler inside) or packaged heat pump?

Packaged unit, all in one piece, need a 3 ton unit. It's very easy to get to, nothing really around it, round flexible hose/duct connecting it to the house with a metal cover of the hoses. Already on a concrete platform... Thanks for the info on them...

After doing my reading, and based on all the recommendations I'm comfortable with Goodman. Just a matter or getting something... I don't mind paying for an install to have it done, but damn I'm not single handedly paying for college tuition for their kids.

I'm a contractor. I get the same response you describe all the time...

Someone has to get the permit and time and effort is there
Someone has to remove the old unit and dispose
Someone has to put a new conc pad in place and demo the old one (most likely old one won't be right size)
Someone has to wire up the new unit that likely has to be replaced and upgraded
Someone has to buy, install, and wire up the aux heat strip
Someone has to wire up the thermostat
Someone has to fab, seal, and install the ductwork to fit your house

I've done it, its a PITA to do all the work. Its at least 10 man-hours if they know what they are doing, if doing it right and making sure its neat, clean, and pretty, its 20 man-hours.

I wouldn't do it for less than what you described. If a 3 ton unit is $4600 installed, take it and move on, its a fair price assuming all above is included.

I bought mine wholesale (3ton Armstrong), had all duct made by my work, I installed myself, and had an electrician check out my wiring for a case of beer and I had at least $3200 in materials outside of my own time.

$4600 is fair :)
