Hvac guys - anything to check before install new blower motor?

Last night just as we were putting our girls to bed upstairs, we got a burning plastic smell and saw some smoke. Turned out the blower motor in the air handler in the attic fried. I found it last night and turned off the power, then pulled the motor this morning.

Before I install a new motor, is there anything I should check? I assume this old motor just died, but I don't want to install a new one if there is some other cause that could have fried it, that could ruin the new motor too. I know I should install a new cap with the new motor

Also, is there a place I could get this motor in rtp/Durham/apex/Cary area, so I don't have to order online and wait for shipping?

From my limited experience, CC Dickson only sells to contractors with accounts. If you walk in there with cash, the parts, and are very polite, you shouldnt have a problem.
 
Thanks guys. I called cc Dickson and they said they only sell to contractors. Same thing when I called ferguson, johnstone, and RE Michel. Someone on another forum recommended Motors & Controls in Raleigh. I called them and went there - they were great. Will get it installed tonite when we get home.

just as a quick rant - this is the one thing a hate the absofuckinglutely most about the HVAC business.

Wood business is the same way. Sure you can go to Lowes or LL, but it's overpriced junk.


My distributer won't even sell to a GC, just flooring contractors.
 
Its all in how you handle and carry yourself.
I've walked into CC Dickson more than once or Trane, or a lot of other specialty supply houses and walked out with what I want. Sometime you just have to talk a bit.

Supply houses run on pretty low margin, high volume models. They don't have a customer service department. They dont want to become inundated with folks returning parts because they bought the wrong thing, or suing them because they burned their house down installing something they didnt know how to.

But if you walk in like youve been there before, eat one of their free mints while you BS about the sport of the day and tell them what you want and act like you know what you are talking about...you'll typically happy.

Either way, Glad you found one somewhere!
 
Not sure who you talked too at Ferguson, but they will sell to anyone. You're not going to get the same pricing as a contractor doing 10's of thousands of dollars a month, but they will sell.
