I'm replacing my 17 year old Payne heat pump split system due to a total loss of R22 and its associated cost after a hole happened in the lineset. What brands are total shit these days and who is less shitty?

Or does someone want to patch a hole and refill me for under $1500?lol

My compressor died after 13 years last year. I went with a GrandAir, or GoodAir or whatever is called, it makes cold air so I’m happy.

Came with a 5 year warranty. My power bill has dropped significantly since then.

I would not expect to get another 17 years out of what’s being made these days. If things are like they were earlier this year you might just have to take what you can get that’s in stock and not backorder for several weeks.

My R22 compressor died about 3 years ago, did a complete upgrade as the furnace was as old as the AC unit and went with a Carrier AC and furnace. so far, it's been flawless with a 10 year warranty. power and gas bills dropped significantly with the new setup.

I can hold out a few weeks for quality. A 1 ton mini split and a few window units are keeping it decent for now.

I've had a American Standard [sister of Trane] for over 8 years now. It's a total heat pump, 17 seer. I've been Very pleased with it. Last month a Schrader valve started leaking. I have a 10 year parts/labor contract, which they tried to arguer about the Freon, but I ended up with a freebie. Odd, but 3 weeks later, unit quit again. This time it was a sensor, & they replaced a set of sensors. Repair guy said it fairly common. Nothing last much past 10 years now.

I've got about 30 lbs of r22 still, but honestly there are several near substutes available out there now, 407 being one. If it's just a hole in the lineset, purge with nitrogen, braze it shut vac and recharge. Start saving $30 a week for a future replacement in a couple years when people hungry for work again
So you'll take the job?lol
I'll pay cash and then you can take @jeepinmatt out for food and drink.

Now that's a guy who takes care of his friends!

Plus @braxton357 can crash in the guest suite at my place and we can all burn stuff and shoot guns and ride dirtbikes.

What time do I bring over the smoked brisket?

For clarity on all of this I will attach a pic. The hole is actually inside the condenser where one of the 220v wires eventually chafed through its insulation and burned a hole in the line when it shorted. It kicked the breaker but not before the damage was done.

I’d fix that or pay a dude to fix it.

That's my first choice, believe me. I know people in a lot of industries but residential hvac isn't one. I'm ready to throw cash at someone to take care of it but I'm not going to pay what I was quoted from a big box company. I got the old "hit them with a # half of a new system and sell the install" price already. R22 alone was quoted to me at $2k for 10 lbs. The next grand was for patching that hole and vacuuming it down. Shit, I already had all the panels off so the dude could access everything he needed before he even got there.

They wanted $125 per pound of R410a, when my Schrader valve leaked it out. They let me slide with my 10 year warranty, but they have also let me know that Freon Won't be covered again! It's all in how the fine print in the warranty, is interoperated.
