Woke up to the house being 50 degrees thermostat is set for 68. I realized last night it was at temp but didn't think anything of it. Looks like it ran all night and temp.in house continue to drop. It's 20 degrees outside. Any thing I can check before I call a tech out

Heat strips could be cashed out.

Just clocked into work so I'm about to have atleast 8 professional opinions to sort through.

I guess it's the plenum coil except my fan is above it instead of below it.

The inside coil would only be Luke warm because it's so cold outside.

This is typically why there are large electric heating elements aka heater strips inside the unit as well.

They act like a large toaster to help warm the air when the heat pump can't pump any heat from outside to inside, bc outside temp is too cold.

If Tstat has a battery change it.

Check breaker that is for the heat strips. It's probably a double pole 240v breaker, usually located near the disconnect for the air handler.

Is the outside unit a block of ice?

Unless you have a package system you have 2 "units" the compressor or heat pump which is outside and the air handler which is either in the crawl space, basement or attic. The heat strips will be inside the air handler. The breaker for the strips will eb beside the air handler not outside at the unit.

A heat pump can only warm ambient air about a max of 20-25 degrees. The strips are exactly as described a giant toaster coil that warms up to XXX degrees and warm the air as it passes over them. If your thermostat has a ligth for "aux" or "emer" heat those should be lit when the strips are engaged.

Breaker is on the air handler in the garage. The more I think about idk if the new thermostat that was installed has an emergency heat switch. Just finished my last bid for the year so gonna head home early today and look at some things. If the Thermostat doesn't have a emergency heat switch i bet it isn't turning them on which is my problem

although they do not always have a emergency heat switch. most of the time it is automatically controlled by the thermostat.

True, heat strips would be automatic, but depending on the age of the unit, newer units have a separate switch to manually turn on the emergency heat [heat strips]. If your thermostat has this option, you can check to see if it comes on. What is the age of the unit?
