I got a full steering system from POS. Orbtrol, T/C pump, Filter(resevoir combo) and a custom ram. What I don't got is a straight answer on a good fluid. I've heard ATF, synthetic hydraulic fluid, Powersteering, and some diesel techs tell me big trucks run motoroil in their pumps. I'm now confussed and clueless. My buddies tell me I went overboard but I wanted good reliable stuff so I don't want to burn it up with the wrong fluid.

Amsoil synthetic hydraulic oil

Valvoline Sytec PS fluid

I tried ATF and it made my pump squeal. I tried hydraulic fluid and it wouldn't stop foaming. I tried Valvoline Syntech and it solved all my problems.
Dunno, to each his own I guess.

I have a hard time believing ATF made your pump squeal. feel hydraulic fluid in your hand versus ATF atf lubricates the best.

I would run sythetic ATF

As I think about it more, maybe it was the fact that it was mixed? I think Dave used some kind of hydraulic fluid before I bought it. As time went by I noticed that it needed to be topped off and somebody told me that ATF would be fine. As soon as I added it the pump squealed like a stuck pig. It was nonstop and obviously bad for the system. I haven't tried pure ATF so maybe my results would be different. I never really thought about the idea that the problem could be the mixture until today. I just thought, "This damn ATF sucks." :)

Anyway, I've had really good luck with synth PS fluid and Station seemed to think it's the way to go as well.

I use regular ol' hydraulic fluid from the parts store per 5 gallon bucket. My steering works fine and it's get's wheeled too.

I don't know what you guys have against just buying normal PS fluid... It's not like that hydraulic fluid or atf is that much cheaper.

Thanks for all the input, seems everyone's partial to what they found works. The "other forum" had alot of good info, seems Sean has even advised more than one type of fluid. The res, cooler, and general design seems to be the biggest issues. I believe I'll modify my res with a home built tank put in a cooler with a seperate fan and throw a dart at the board to get my fluid choice. Does Lucas oils make any fluids in this application, they weren't mentioned.
