I have a bs in computer engineering. I did not take the FE or PE. At the time, there was no computer engineering PE. We were able to take the EE PE with some additional crunch sessions and a few did.

I am not, and would never call myself an engineer. I correct people that say I'm an engineer. I have tons of respect for those few in my class that took and passed the EE, but I knew where I was going to work and it wouldn't have helped me.

Note to self, don't go to Oregon and call myself an engineer. Not many ME's I know have their PE, not many industries require it.

I wouldn't claim it.

My official job title is Mechanical Design Engineer, so I don't know why I shouldn't be able to call myself that. My job doesn't require a PE. They asked me if I wanted to take the PE exam, but that just meant I'd have more responsibilities here so I declined.

Of course, I normally just say "I'm in engineering" rather than "I'm an engineer".

Probably less than 1% of the ME's where I work have their PE. I don't have mine. It is not necessary to find gainful employment.

Sounds like the state got butt hurt and sent the legal team after him. It doesn’t sound like he forged a fake PE stamp even though I would expect some subject matter expert to have a PE to get out of a government fine.

but beneficial to have :D pass the test once and you have pretty decent job security

I have always heard that it is illegal in NC and SC as well.
To be more specific it isnt illegal to say "Im an engineer" it is illegal for a company to represent their employee as an engineer if he isnt a PE.
Typically in MEP firms I see non-PE's have the title of Electrical Engineering Designer.

I am an engineer. I am not a licensed professional engineer because that would require me to act professional. Many of the PE's I know are only PE's because they chase licenses and certifications and acronyms after their names, but that does not make them a "good" engineer.

During my first 10 years in the field of Engineering after getting out of school I only knew 2 Professional Engineers in the Division of my company. They both had their PEs before they arrived. I am now in a different role within the same company and I am one of a handful of 50+ engineers that do not have a PE license. 99% of the people I now know who have it say they got it because everybody else had one and it was considered as part of paying your dues.

So, April 4th I get to spend all day taking test. I have been studying since Thanksgiving. It’s amazing at all the things you forget.

Sad thing is our Engineer we use to have shop drawings made told me anyone who has a PE can put their stamp on something he has no clue about. See this all the time from EOR who thinks he understands metal framing. This has gotten me in trouble when I took a job for a GC doing a Job Corps building , EOR "designed a load bearing building" our engineer tried to shut it down since it was unsafe. Couldn't do a damn thing no state or local inspector had the authority. Month later had to sit through a several hour review with the NC building board review.

As far as I know the building is still standing in Brevard.[emoji51]

I think that is where the ethics portion kicks in. But, it is true. I am taking the machine design concentration of the PE exam, but if I pass it I could in theory stamp HVAC or any designs. Honestly, I don’t want to sign shit, too much liability down the road.

It’s mostly the finance people from what I can tell.

Knew that was coming...was even gonna say ‘here come the our hands are tied by cost’ comments. But was semi-legit for all those ‘who dafuq designed this’ moments, we’ve all had them, especially while wrenching. I know who I’ve personally blamed in my career, but couldn’t tell you the letters behind their name. I also know that letters behind a name typically enhance career trajectory and if you believe the Peter principle has any merit, there’s my answer. But if all they’re doing is signing off, someone else did the work.

Who here would claim to be an architect?

I don't advertise and rarely get paid for my enginereerin but I am a redneck PE arkiteck who works mostly w reclaimed materials..........

You got butter and extra salt on that popcorn. Pass that shit and grab a beer.

I don't design bridges or buildings or roads. I have zero need for PE licensure (my dad actually was a PE and did a lot of expert witness work) in my field, so I will never be a licensed PE. I have a degree, I don't stamp drawings, and can call myself whatever I want because it will never matter in the context of legal/public representation.

This really is the same as architects and having the "AIA" after their name, like "PE" for engineers.
