I am currently banking with Coastal Federal and BB&T.

They're fuckheads. I hate them. On a personal level.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions for a bank that won't fuck me on every transaction I do. I've had some point me towards a credit union, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm not eligible for a State Employees Credit Union account, so any other ideas?

Thanks.

To me banks are like cell phone companies. You either love them or hate them based on your personal service experience, but they're really all about the same. For every bank I say I love, you're going to find someone who says that bank f'd them over. Add to that the Bank of America's who are targeting the illegals and you're basically choosing the lesser of the evils.

That being said, I've generally looked for the bank with the most ATMs and the least costs for me. We bank with Wachovia currently with an account that costs me nothing if I don't go in the bank. I use online access and free online billpay. I get a free checkcard/ATM and I pay for my checks, which I write less than 5 of per month anymore.

I had RBC Centura for awhile. Got turned down on everything I applied for by them AND somehow my account balance was different on my end than what they showed. Things kept getting screwy. Switched over to Wachovia ( walkallovia) and have been with them going going on 2 years. Have been happy ever since and was able to get what I applied for when I needed it.

I'v been with the credit union for several years there good to me

I used to be with CCB with no problems for a long time. Then 2 or 3 or 4 years ago, they got bought out by Suntrust. Suntrust has been ok, but I occasionally have to deal with random fees being applied to my account (they always have gotten rid of them, its just a nuisance).

Wachovia here as well.

They are pretty much everywhere now, and I have no problems with them at all. Good bank

Any credit union is a thousand times better than any bank. They're all a bunch of crooks! A credit union is a "not for profit organization" a bank is a nothing but profit organization. Why else would they charge you $10 to cash a check that's drawn on THEIR bank just because you don't have an account. Walkallovaya bank in particular, but they all do it. Not saying Costal is better, but they're gonna charge you less for everything. I's stick with them and use cashpoints atms to avoid fees.

What's wrong with coastal? I've been happy with them, but then again i do 90% of my banking online..

I don't really want to get into it, but basically, a whole bunch of ridiculous charges, not making my paycheck that I deposited midday yesterday available to me until Monday (leaving me with $5, a bare fridge, and an empty gas tank for the weekend), and an "I don't give a shit, you're just an account number" attitude on the part of no less than 4 Coastal Federal customer service reps. :shaking:

Fuck em.

Jeff and rattlecan, any credit union in particular I should be looking for? I never really put much thought into credit unions, and I wish I had.

We are also with Coastal, haven't had an issue, didn't even need to contact them after the last car payment, they just sent the title ( had to bug the hell out off CCB when that time came )

Coastal is putting up more and more ATMs, which is good, but after 5 transactions at a CASH POINTS per month, they will charge you a dollar per transaction, still better than getting socked on both ends $1.75+ at the dispensing ATM.

Well, I'm with SECU, but if you have a relative there as a member, I think they can sponser you. Not sure though. Ever try going to a different branch of coastal? Maybe it was just a bad crew. Not trying to stick up for them as customer no service seems to be the way of buisness nowadays, but it's worth a shot. SECU has been great for me.

People writ me checks for this and for that. Most of the time I need to cash them, not wait even longer on the money. I am with NC credit union. The won't cash anything without a hold.
A check on Wachovia I had to produce 2 ID's and put my fingerprint on the check??? (this is at Wachovia)
BBnT charged me $5 to cash a check on them
So now I request Money orders from the post office. They cash them no problem.

have been with southern bank and trust got fee'd to death. then went to wachovia same fees. been with state employee's credit union for about 8 plus years now and like them very much

Truliant Federal Credit Union. The BEST and I belong to SECU.
Not sure how far east they go but they are in Cary. They appear to be aggressively pursuing growth. Do direct deposit, checking and a CC. No need to walk in to do business. Great customer service over the phone. Got a 5 year, used car loan from them 2 years ago at a 5% rate! Strongly suggest calling them.

Truliant Federal Credit Union here as well. Best place I have ever banked. Got used car loan from them for 3.75% about 3 years ago. Low rates and great customer service.
