Everything I own is Apple but my mac is just getting too old (05) and I don't need the drop the bank on a MacBook.

I want something that I'm primarily going to use to get on the internet/wifi and download personal gopro video onto YouTube.

So what say ye? Budget of less than 1k.

I have came to view laptops like washers/dryers.
The gap has shrunk dramatically between the best and the worst. I bought a $325 Lenovo at Best Buy 2 years ago and its been flawless. Despite using it at a full season of ECORS dust bowls. When it craps out I wont spend a dime in repairs Ill trash and replace.

I received notice from Amazon, that they have "Warehouse Deals"; I did a quick browse, they got it all, phones/ computers, most are listed as used, [returns] but the prices are worth checking!
I also bought 3 flashlights [recommended here] from T-Mart , but haven't taken time to look them over.

Chromebook would probably be best for you and it's cost efficient

If he didn't want to download go pro videos I would agree, I don't think you can do them on it.

Is size and weight a factor? When you start to go more ultra book the macs are the same price about as a comparable windows, sometimes cheaper. If you want good battery life find something with the newer intel haswell processor and ssd. If not just buy something cheap.

I've had my walmart laptop for $276 for 5 years still does everything

I bought my 60 year old dad a Samsung Chromebook for $200 last month and to all of my family's surprise, he LOVES IT! It took him a little getting used to, but all he uses it for is email, forums, and news, so there was no need for all the other functionality.

I really want something that won't burn the second layer of skin off my lap with a good strong long power cord. Something touch screen is a plus I guess with the new Microsoft os.

I am still not a huge fan of touchscreen or windows 8. Using a touchscreen my stuff always has smudge marks, etc. I would look at ultrabooks if you can. You can even get a macbook air 13" for 1,000 if you can get an education discount, or you can look at apple refurbs. Most of the good Windows ultrabooks though are going to be at least 1,000 is the only issue.
