Ok, so I've 86 4runner 22re with an auto trans. The thing is a dog to say the least. I know the 22re needs to be freshened up a little but I was wondering if I should bother going through with a 5 speed swap or maybe look into a th350 swap. Any suggestions and or inputs from experience?

The th350 will take more horse power to operate than the factory auto, so if it already lacks power then...
swapping to a five speed is not that big of a deal, just a flywheel , clutch, and peddle assembly. Just bolt it in.:driver:

I'd go the 5spd route, as mentioned above the th350 will take more power to push. Since you are dealing with an '86 you could also go the 4.3 v-6/gm atuo swap route or swap in a 350/th350 combo. The 4.3 tbi engine makes a good swap with decent power and can normaly be found already with a 700r4 and can easily have a 205 or 208 case swapped in with it, but the 5speed swap is MUCH easier than all that, just depends on what you'd like the final outcome to be.

Thanks, I was leaning towards the 5spd. I heard that the pedal assembly is a brake and clutch combo, is that true? Other then the trans/ t-case, flywheel, clutch, pedal, and shifters what would I need?

I don't really want to do an engine swap. I would like to keep it as stock as possible. I run Mud Boggs and as soon as I do that I would be in a class that has trucks runnin tube chasis and big blocks.

Which pit do you run? We run hubert from time to time, my 6cyl for is already in a class with big blocks, aftermarket cams and such. It sucks big time, but the points leader in my class is running a stock powertrained xj on 42's or 47's.

I run Little Doo in Newport. Is that a white 2000 XJ if so I think I now him. I was runnin in B street light with 37's and now I just got some 35's so that should put me in A street light. I have nothing done to the rig except lift tires and axles.

Yeah, that's him, Anthony is his name I believe. You should check us out in Hubert sometime.

Yep that's him, he runs in Newport. Last I heard he was building his garage so that's why he wasn't runnin. I've been down there for the big race last year, but I didn't run. A couple of the guys I hang with run it every now and then. You might know them, Alex from Xtreme Offroad and John my neighbor. That pit looks like major breakage to me. Once I get everything working right I'll head down there and run one of these days.

Yeah, I know Alex and have met John. That pit's not taht bad as long as you keep it on the ground. The first run I made with the F-150 it had alot of slop in both diffs and the rear driveshaft, it made it with no issues. My buddy John did break a fron u-joint strap on his '78 Cherokke down there 2 weeks ago, but he landed it on the front tires wide ass open.

Well once I get a front locker, replace the rear locker, and rebuild the motor I'll be down there. Until then I'll "test" it out at Newport. In fact I think I'm gonna run this weekend. You should come out.

If I'm able to get away for the evening I'll see fi I can shoot down there. The 6cyl in the Ford is sick, and about to be pulled for a big block swap, but maybe the new ZJ can get it's feet wet.
