i've got a cj7 and I'm trying to come up with a way put a storage box for tools along with a child seat in the back. It seems to me that I had heard of a child seat that could be hard mounted but I haven't been able to find it.
Anybody have any solutions to this?? I'm sure that I could find someway to attach floor mounts to a plastic seat but that just doesn't seem strong enough to me. Or build a frame with straps to attach a plastic seat in the traditional way??
Thx,
Tim

My suspicion is that at that size/age, you might still want a more classic car-seat that kind of cradles him and reclines just a little. With all the bumping and shaking, I'd think he'd bounce around a bit in the one posted above. The nice thing about most car seats is that the seat curves up on the sides to hold them into place... although 35lbs at 2 is a pretty good size boy...
If you get a seat that has the "latch system" latches, you should be able to use those to fairly easily latch the thing into place. The one we have has 4 different latches, so it's held down from 4 diferent places, and that sucker will not move when they're hunkered down. Bonus is, it already has a 5-point harness built in. Just might need extra head support.

I set the TJ up with a tuffy security drawer on the floor (made to fit under the factory fold and tumble seat) then got the smaller of the two kids seats PRP has (check the link Brandon posted) and was planning to run tube from the custom cage work across the top of the box to give me mounting points for the seat. The tube can be set up so the seat would be in a more reclined position. Those seats wrap around the kids really well and are set up for 4 or 5 point harness....so in the end it would be like a permenent car seat that is much more secury than a seat belted in car seat on top of the bend seat. I never finished mine before I sold the TJ so i don't really have pics for ya.

I have 2 kids. 2 and 4. In June we went to Uwharrie. The 2 year old always uses the harness seat everyday in the car. For the jeep i let her sit in the booster seat that uses the shoudler harness. I did this because of the heat of the ride because the harness seat would have cooked her. But when we tested it out on the trail, we found out she just could not keep herself upright in this kind of seat. The harness seat would have been much better. So she rode only a little bit and we took her back to camp. The 4 year old fits just fine with the booster seat used in conjunction with an over the shoulder seat belt. The 7 has more room than my CJ5. To make room for the kids i made a swing out rack for the tire and cooler and will add compartments later or tools and such. Makes the world of differnce in room in the jeep. I have used just lap belts to hold in a harness, but i feel much better now with the kids having the shoulder harnesses. I used TJ rear seat belts bolted to my roll cage.

We always kept the boys in thier big seats, and if it got to hard on them, we would put thier bike helmets on.

The plan was to put a PRP bench seat in the rear, but we lost the boy pictured due to cancer a year ago so we are thinking about putting in a child PRP seat to match the fronts for our other boy.

They have been to George Washington National Forrest, Paragon & Rausch Creek.

I've taken him to uwharrie with his regular car seat belted into the rear seat. the seat didn't seem to stay in one place very well. I'm ok with either the prp seat mounted to the floor or as ratlabguy said with the latch system, but it seems like it would be easier and less fab to do the prp seat.

I'm going to have the roll bar/cage built up this winter for more protection for him, although I don't try anything hard with him in the jeep i'd rather be safe than sorry. I wheeled at uwharrie one time with a guy who had two of his kids with him and he had added window netting, like on race cars, to the sides of the rear cage. i'm going to do that also once it's built.

i appreciate the info, and if anybody else has any suggestions i'd appreciate their input...

When I had that set-up with one kid, I pulled the Rear Bench and Installed a single OE CJ bucket seat to the Passenger side of the back seat area. Then installed a lap belt. That left the Driver side of it to mount a Tool box. Or in my case I Installed Straps to the floor of the tub and I'd strap my tool box down. And yes, Everything was VERY tight and secure.

That was the way i was going to do it... but we didnt stop at one ;)

My son is now 3 but has wheeled since he was 1.5. We have been to Tellico, Raush Creek, URE , etc...

I did almost the same thing except I gave up some storage space in order to put my son in the middle of the tub, its a little safer in a roll over. I attached a car seat on top of the cj seat which helped to absorb some of the bumps. Strapped it and everything around it/him down to keep things in their place.

I usually have my 2.5 year old out spotting for me, so the seat isnt needed, either that or she is driving:driver:

Ha Ha.....Just kidding..........We Just use her regular car seat in the back of the xj........She loves it!!
But i dont do the hard stuff while she is riding either.

I've been wanting to take my 2 yr. old too. I think he would love it. I had a factory instatrunk in the back and I took it out and found the metal loop attatched to the tub. Now I just fasten the security strap from the top of the car seat to it and use the lap and shoulder belt through it and it doesn't move at all. I think I'm going to take him the next time we go.
