So I've about had it with people driving behind me when I'm in my 86 VW diesel. It's by no means quick. I don't drive it like an old man, it just doesn't have much power. Once I'm moving I drive 5 MPH over, but I can't tell you how many honks I get leaving a light. It also has close to 300k miles on it. It smokes a bit. That's a mix of diesel smoke & a bit of oil. It doesn't use much oil, but I think most are ignorant to the reality that there are diesel cars out there.

This past weekend I had a lady honking her horn as I drove through a light. She was waving her hands because of the smoke, which is NO WHERE NEAR some modified trucks I've seen. She then pulled next to me & proceeded to cuss me out.

I feel like I should get some vinyl cut for the back of it to inform that it's a diesel, slow & may smoke!

I find this interesting...not really related to your discussion, but even as few as 5 years ago, I seem to still remember smoking beaters on the road from the 70's and 80's. I can't tell you the last time I saw a vehicle blowing blue smoke...I suppose that's a good thing, but I can't really find a rhyme or reason. Are the 10-20 year old vehicle being driven today better built than the 10-20 year old vehicles a decade ago???

Yeah get a sign that says "This vehicle is old, slow, and burns diesel.
If you don't like it, feel free to buy me a new car."

I just smile at the arrogant bastards. My yota leaves a nice blue trail every time I pull away from a light or stopsign. Gotta make sure the exhaust runners get lubricated. It has 236xxx miles.

The best one I have for you is I was at a drive up ATM the other day. After I got my cash, I eased out on the clutch. Looked in the mirror and the blue cloud was right in front of the ATM. There was a pretty new looking prius behind me in line. Got a good laugh at that.

my dad dd'd an 81 rabbit diesel for a few years back around 01-03. Called it 'the habit', and would leave a nice diesel cloud if anyone tailgated.

Love those cars

Cash for Clunkers...

Got 3 guys rocking VW diesels at work, 2 are the old rabbits & one is a newer TDI.
I know for a fact both of those rabbits took about a mile to get up to 45mph, but all of them get around 45-50mpg!

That's me! My OD is not working, but last it was 53 MPG was the best I could do. Without absolutely babying it, I get around 47. It's not pretty, but is saving me a ton of $ for little purchase price.

I want one to DD, but when I was looking the prices seemed a bit high for my wallet. Kinda like the 7.3l PSD markups, everybody wanted a mint for a 30-40 year old VW diesel and a mint & a half for the newer TDIs....went with my Gold Ho' at 30mpg, but I've been keeping my eyes out.:shaking:

With the price of diesel, I'm sticking with Gas! And my DD is a 95 Toyo celica, 5sp. Always average 34/35mpg! Using some oil, only smokes when U crank it.
220,000mi, ought to be good for another 100K!:D

I love my 04 TDI Passat. The price of diesel also comes with the torque of diesel. I love being able to roll throttle at 80mph in 5th gear and have significant acceleration out of a 2.0 liter motor.

It is completely stupid that diesel costs more than gas, but diesels are still very economical. I change the oil every 10k miles instead of every 5k, and I get 40mpg around town and 45+ on the highway, with plenty of power, 4 doors, and a nice, comfortable car. A comparable gas powered car probably gets 30mpg. Figure gas is 3.29, diesel is 3.89, thats 18% more expensive, but 33% better fuel economy. And thats comparing regular unleaded, not premium.

1983, 300d mercedes rolling coal :D I get the waving hand from folks often, when I see this waving hand I depress the throttle harder and automaticly my middle finger jumps out the window.

Fawk 'em! Smile big give them the rod then quickly look down at their wheel with utter amazement like its about to fall off.

That'll keep them guessing about what it is that you saw on their car. If you're lucky it'll make them pull over so you get to roll the coals on them again!

How about one of these? It's called a Drivemocion

I've seen several on CL recently for $1k or so. They may need some work though.

/quote] I'd rather not respond to road rage in this manner.

As long as you aren't in the left hand lane leaving the light then flip em the bird and smile. If you were in the left hand lane, well then move that slow ass pos outta my way:D
the interstate is one place I avoid with this car. It's a tin can & at those speeds I'd rather not take the chance.

wanna sell it. i have cash.

I've got a 81 diesel Mazda b2200. She ain't fast, bit will keep up with traffic and run 5mph over (on flat ground). I got used to the tailgaters after a while, people yelling about smoke, ect. Always loved it when some blonde woman in a new converitble bummer would wind up behind me. Proper application of throttle and pop the clutch and it'll smoke out an intersection. :flipoff2: almost made another woman wreck once. We we're just putting along (riding my ass, of course). Press the clutch, couple of quick revs and she almost went in the ditch.

I and 3 other broke-ass friends rode to Myrtle Beach for spring break in ones 1980sumpin new VW deisel pickup, I and another in the back, drankin and waving at the ladies on the way  . We debated who's car to take and decided to sacrifice comfort for 2 riders and save money for drankin, dining, partying, etc, not having to buy fuel at all on the 3 day trip from Raleigh and back. I think we put $20 in the tank. I did'nt believe the mileage he said he was getting before this trip but saw for myself.
