Hello,
I am the latest owner of a '77 fj40. Bought it from the father of a IH8MUD member in Minn. It is a reasonably nice truck, needs some work but runs well (most of the time). I've owned the truck for only a couple of months and after driving it a few days, I noticed a strong oil smell and saw that a leak had developed from either the transmission or transfer case. I cannot tell exactly due to the plate protector. I can do some work on some cars but I need help with this. I'm looking for a shop or mechanic recommendations in the Raleigh area.
As general information, the PO did the following on the truck;
2F engine - Replaced with another Cruiser engine after not fully engaging the distributor (which drives the oil pump) on the original engine. Replacement engine has approximately 70k original miles- desmogged, non-US vacuum advance distributor, header, custom 2.5" exhaust.
New clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, and resurfaced flywheel.
SM465 transmission: rebuilt w/ new brgs and synchros, plate style adapter (3/4" thick plate adapting to Toyota t-case). 3spd transfer case (came behind FJ40s with a 3spd transmission: this has a lower low range than the original 4spd case): completely rebuilt
ARB air lockers front and rear factory 4.11 ring and pinion gears with ARB air compressor with wiring harness. All new bearings and seals in the front and rear differentials and axles.
Front Birfield Eliminator Kit: replaces the birfield joints with custom axle
shafts and Dana 44 U-joints, also replaces hubs and lockouts with Dana 60 (1 ton) components
33x12.50x15 BFG Mud Terrains on white steel 15x8 wheels. 2.5" Skyjacker softride suspension system with shocks
1.5" over stock length shackles, heavy duty with reinforced cross-bar.
Power steering using Astro van PS box mounted inside of the frame rail out of the way. GM style "teardrop" Power Steering Pump on custom brackets.
'72 replacement tub, including the firewall, from an Arizona truck, cleaned and painted the frame. Grey bedliner on the interior of the tub. Custom rock sliders with reinforced rocker panels. Drop-down aluminum tailgate with internal storage area. Wet Okele seat covers over factory seats. Full 8-pt family custom rollcage.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Jon at Blackoutautosports (.com) is pretty close over in Apex.

It's probably just a gasket in the adapter between the 465 & the LC case..

I've not seen the birf eliminator that uses the D60 stuff.. can you post a picture of that?

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply, I'll try and contact Blackoutautosports soon.
As for your request, I don't have a a digital camera to take photos. I'll see if I can borrow one and take some shots. What views are you wanting? I'll admit I am a novice to 4x4's and bought the truck because I always wanted one, with the intent to use it as my weekend vehicle.

I am in wilmington and do alot of Toyota work, i have restored many FJ's and just love working on toyota's

If you want a toyota expert to work on that cruiser for you give me a call, my prices are very resonable

Hello Brendan

Thanks for the information. I've been able to take the trans/t-case protector off. It looks like I've got several small leaks, oil and gear oil. They don't seem to be major just more of a nusiance.

I will keep you in mind when I get ready to have it looked at.
