so my last drag-it-home project yielded me an early willys 4 cyl flathead that had things growing out of the places where parts should be. soooo, it got me thinking. the wifey has wanted for years for me to make some sort of 'art' from my junk. so heres my plans. strip the motor down. clean up the block, paint it and make a perforated cover for the bottom where the pan would be. then make a planter out of it. flowers out the top and ivy out the valve window. put it out on the back porch.
then take the entire reciprocating assembly/valvetrain minus the flywheel and weld/bolt it all together such that it is relative to itself in the block. hang on shop wall.

look at both and enjoy beverage of choice.

dumb? or clever? this motor is SHOT and I have a couple more.

If yours is anything like mine...she was happy when I tipped a block up on end, filled the cylinders with wine bottles and called it a wine rack. Actually sat in the corner of the kitchen and was used until I needed the block for some mock up.

^ thats cool too. but I need counter space for my grandaddys old cast iron sausage maker. its restored and needs to sit where I can see it everyday.

This is where Im at now. I welded washers on the springs to simulate compression so that the tops are all in line when the lobes are engaged with the tappets. I love the patina. Gonna start mating the two such that the elevation of the valvetrain is correct. all in all I really dig it. I just put a sleeve of paper under the bearing caps of the con rods to hold them still.

You could use the timing chain (but welded solid) to support the front end.

That's a gear-drive camshaft. Only the earliest ones were chain-drive. At the correct gear mesh it would still sit lop-sided.

its not a metal gear on the cam side. its fibrous or something weird. its very soft

either way, I still think its real cool - it was going to end up as rebar, so this is much better fate. a couple kids in the neighborhood now know what 4 strokes means. its cool the way I have it setup, you can see every stroke happening.
