Yeserday (Sunday) evenin gwe were makin ga trek down I-85 and 40, from north of Oxford to Winston.
Between Oxford and Greenssboro, we passed no less than 9 HP vehicles (and those are just the ones we noticed). Being a holiday weekend, I figured they'd be out in full force... and admittedly being a recovering leadfoot, each and every time I caught myself hiting the brakes and checking my gauges (instinct), even though I knew I was keeping it below 75.

Beauty of it is - ever one of these cars was unmanned. I would not have noticed, my copilot (wife) did... so she started looking.
So, my hat's off to you, HP guys, whoever's idea that was. I've always marvelled that it was pretty unfair/uncool that on vacation weekends, it made more work for you guys. Hope you guys got a nice weekend off too. The 350 miles i wa on the road, things averaged a nice mellow speed. And, i guess this was a nice use for the scrub cars w/ bad engines etc, lol....

Wife and I agreed that the only thing needed was a "dummy" car w/ flashing lights and a "pulled car" here and there just to add edge to the few folks that picked up on the empty car trick....

Oh amd before anybody jumps on me for "blowing the cover", that's exactly why I waited until today to post up about it.

Heh heh, Just one of their tactics to make people slow down. Just the way it is... If I'm on the highway.. my rule of thumb is.... If you stay 9 mph or less odds are they won't mess with you, if they do - you can get a ticket but no points on insurance. As far as speeding, I haul ass sometimes - but only to keep up with traffic. If everyone in the fast lane is doing 85 - 90 I will too, I just try not to be the first one in train or the last one in the train. No gurantee, but It seems to be pretty safe. I went through Alabama one year and I don't think I got below 90 the whole way across the state - I had plenty of people who were passing me...

The one I saw on us 1 in cary I figured to have broken down, till it was there the next day...

saw 3 of those in the Clayton / Garner area, 2 on 40, one on 70.

In the 40/42 area, I have seen them use a fully marked squad, WITH BLUES FLASHING in the construction zone. It's not till you pass the car that you notice the solar panal mounted to the boot lid to charge the batteries keeping the lights going.

One of these days, the dummy is gonna be IN FRONT of the blues, cause he thought he knew the drill!

Drove down to Carolina Beach today. Saw quite a few unmanned SHP vehicles on I40. must have worked because i really didn't notice many people speeding. i set my cruise on 74mph, that way i don't have to worry about spoiling my day with a ticket.

NY State police has a car parked on I81 at the NY/PA boarder, its been there for several years and has had cardboard cutouts inside from time to time. Funny part is when a 2nd car lines up next to it, its hard to spot it :)

Nothing beat a CB radio, you would have heard they were empty

went from washington dc to wilmington.... on the way up to dc on thursday i only passed 2 cops the whole time. on the way home on saturday night, that was a different story. im not exaggerating in any way either when i say there was a patrol car every 10 miles on i-95 / i-40... bastards

I dont understand what your saying here...

Your calling High Way Patrol officers bastards because they uphold a law that YOUR breaking..and risk their lives doing it?

Uh, yeah, it's a fabulous holiday weekend and they're having to sit around waiting for your wanna-be-law-breaking ass... who's the bastard?

Now, I'm VERY guilty of speeding and getting pised when caught - but it better be a really unusual circustance to be pissed at anybody other than yourself.

went down to Jacksonville (FL)Saturday and came back today.

Saw a total of 7 cops on the way down. All in GA and had 2 cars pulled over. (4 cruisers at the first pull 3 at the 2nd)

Way home today?

None. made it from Jacksonville to Rock hill in 4hr 40min.

Cruise set at 88 the whole way, ran with traffic and listened to the scan for traps.

Just hope everyone was safe, and good to here the men in blue may have got a lil more time away

I would imagine that just about every HP in NC was down here for the race this weekend.. at least that's what it looked like.

Thats cuz theyre the only ones that can deal with the traffic down there.... One year i waited longer to get through the one light that Concord PD was manning then I did at the whole other 1.5 mile stretch that SHP had...

They pride in being able to clear out all that traffic in the short amount of time they do...

On the way back from hky, saw state trooper cherokee in the median, hit the brakes, drove by and then saw it was empty.

Meanwhile after cutting across to 421 from Wilkesboro to Boone, saw 3 troopers, 2 of which had people pulled

Yeah that ones been there for a while (on 321, just past Church's Body Shop)

its been there since early last week, maybe even the week before.

There is one outside of Las Vegas, towards Boulder city NV that the locals tell me has been there for years. It has a manican (sp) in a uniform in it. Locals say it fools the tourist every time lol

The local cops do it back home all the time.. (Morehead City).. One in Vanceboro even has a dummy inside the car, and on occation my radar detector goes off when i drive by it, so i guess they put the radar on every once in a while...

yeah how bout those were causing traffic to back up last weekend when me and my buddies were trying to head down to the beach. the traffic was backed up on 40 right there at 70 because everyone kept slowing down and looking at the car, but as soon as everyone got passed it they picked up speed again. traffic was only moving at about 35 mph which on 40 is too dang slow for me
