Got a frantic call from my wife while I was at work yesterday. She was at my parents house doing rehab with my dad who had a bad motorcycle wreck about 2 months ago. She said something about some detective called and they had our 40"TV, camera, and camelbak. She wasn't sure whether to believe them, and couldn't figure out how he found her, so she didn't give him any info, but got his number. I called the number and got ahold of another detective, and I was already sure it was legit, because who else has a 40" Samsung TV AND a Camelbak. I gave them our address to go check it out (they didn't know where it came from). The detective had found a picture of our building permit on the camera, looked it up on the GIS, found the owner phone number (which happened to be my parents home #), and called there.

My wife got there about the same time as the cops. Turns out our door had been kicked in, and the worthless sacks of crap had stolen our TV, 2 digital cameras (1 functionally retarded), video camera (also functionally disabled), FRS Radios, a 9mm, a box of .380 ammo, a Camelbak and a homemade clay bowl full of change. They didn't really mess anything up inside other than the change slung everywhere. Also they knocked over the bedside table when they lifted the mattress, but didn't break anything.

Turns out they had broken into at least 3 houses in our neighborhood. Someone near the first house called in the suspicious vehicle, and on the way out of the neighborhood (big, older neighborhood), the police spotted them and engaged a chase. They made it a couple miles before they got the stopsticks and crashed. They caught one guy, but the other got away. Apparently he had the 9mm and the .380 ammo.

I went down to the police station and identified our stuff. Everything was in fine shape except one small scratch in the lower right corner of the TV, and the absence of the 9mm. Even the bowl was still in good shape and full of change. We were hit about 10am, and had practically everything back by 3pm.

Of course then I had to go spend about $400 on a new door, molding, hardware etc, all night last night getting the old door frame out and the new door in. Tonight I will get to do molding and finishing, and dealing with disposing of the old door, frame, and molding.

All in all, it really didn't turn out so bad. Wife wasn't home, we got the majority of our stuff back in good condition, and we got a new door on the house. But the 5 hours I missed from work and 10-12hrs I'm losing at the shop, combined with the hassle and stress isn't making my already overloaded life any easier.

Now I've got to figure out what to do about insurance. I don't know if the deductible is $250 or $500, but between the door, gun, and lost time from work, we're around $1000. It's really not worth it, but why do we have insurance if we're not going to use it when something happens. Could I get a quote for labor for replacing the door and be reimbursed for that too?

Also, if anybody near west Charlotte is good with trim and molding and wants to come do mine, I'd appreciate it immensely.

That stinks Matt! Glad your wife wasn't home.

As for the insurance, I think it might be difficult to claim lost wages in the claim. I think you probably could claim the labor to put the door back, but I am sure they have a standard rate and time for that

Be careful about using homeowners, or even calling your agent about it, they can/may/will jack up your rate. It happened to my mom when she just called to ask about something and the next cycle her premium went up. She called to ask why and was told because she had called, not filed a claim, about a loss. Use homeowners for catastrophic losses only.

You will not be able to claim loss wages on your own home owners insurance. You can file a claim for the gun and the new door. They would pay for the cost of the door and the labor to take the old one out and put the new one in, paint & everything that goes w/ installing a new door. Basically to make you hole again. Did you take any pictures of the damages? You should and also do not disgard the damaged door until they give you premission to do so. That's if you feel like the entire loss, that's over your deductible, is worth letting them deal with. But decide if it is worth using your coverage / ins in the first place.

sorry to hear that man!

You have insurance for when the tree falls on the house not when the baseball breaks the glass.
You can probably get around $2500 for the door and labor and maybe $500 on the gun.
So $3000 -$500 deductible out $2500 and your premium increase will eat it up.

by the way get $1000 deductible on the house it will cut the premiums damn near in half.

sorry to hear about the bad news

yeah, don't do a small claim. Those will kill your rate next cycle when they raise rates...

sorry to hear that.@ least the wifey wasnt home.
my fiancee was telling me the other day some hispanic guy walks up offering to mow the grass, even hands her a buisness card. she noticed right away the card looked like it had been in the road and he picked it up. she also noticed it was in indian trail(about30-45mins away). she politely declined and he said ok. stuck out his hand, so she did the same to shake his hand. he grabbed her hand tight, pulled her into him and kissed her on the cheek! she shoved him away ran inside and quickly called me. i rush home, and of course the bastards nowhere to be found! lucky him. cant trust anyone these days

I would be a little concerned about that. Obviously he knew you were not home, and she was home alone (because of course he knew you would have smashed his face if you could catch him). Personally I don't let my wife answer the door if she is home alone during the day, just too many bad things could happen.

yeah well thats another battle, bc she smokes and has to go outside.......:shaking:

I had to spend last night at my mom's house. The night before, somebody tried to break into 2 houses while folks were at home sleeping, one about 2 houses down and across the street, the other about 3 houses down. Someone else in the neighborhood we learned about a week ago, somebody came in and stole her computer from downstairs, while she was sleeping upstairs.

Everything was quiet last night...but a lot of the neighbors had their lights on all night. Worse part is, I was watching out most of the night, just to see who was wandering around....not one cop car drove through...you'd think, with 2 near-home invasions (that's what I'd call them), that the cops would at least run thru once on the following night. Nope.

I've told my mom tonight that if she hears so much as a bump in the night to call 911, then me, ASAP.

Sorry to hear about this Matt. Glad no one was hurt, and that you got your stuff back. Good luck getting caught up with your repairs and shop work. I hope they catch the other guy before he has a chance to use that 9mm.

Hate to hear this Matt but like mentioned before, don't turn it in on your ins, I learned the hard way:shaking:

And frankly, I kinda wish your wife was at home knowing that she knows how to use a gun....bastards may have gotten what they deserved.

We did take pictures

We rent the house from my parents, so the homeowners stuff is up to them. We don't really have anything to claim on the renters insurance.

That would infuriate me ten times more than a break-in. He needs a serious beat down.

I hate it for you dude, hopefully something good will come out of this.
Good luck!
It did, we got a new door!

I'm glad she wasn't at home, the thought of them being there has shaken her up enough. I do wish I would have been there. She is now in the process of what if'ing herself to death. What if she had been asleep, or what if she had been in the shower, etc. I tell her to keep a method of medium range personal defense handy whenever she is at home alone, but she doesn't listen. I told her I've put a pistol on the bathroom window while I'm in the shower before, there's nothing to be ashamed of.

It is a definite relief that they caught one of the guys and we got our stuff back. It's almost like it didn't happen, except I see the new door everytime I walk in. I kept asking the cops if they could bring the guy they caught back over for a few hours, and they just laughed and said they wished they could.

The trial will be in about a year because it's a felony. Seems like a long time to wait, I'm sure they'll be out on bond soon.

id see if you could find a buddy that does interior work, have him do a nice, quote, and i not knowing what kind of 9mm it was, i could give you a nice quote on one(i own a gunshop lol) and with 380 ammo prices crazy throw that in on insurance to boot. They will prolly catch the other guy that got away at the hospital, when he kabooms that pistol with the 380 ammo lol

I kinda wondered about that too. I hope he manages to shoot himself somehow.

Call the police/sheriffs dept and tell them you want a keep check done in the neighborhood at night... that way they will haveto ride by there
