Got a frantic call from my wife while I was at work yesterday. She was at my parents house doing rehab with my dad who had a bad motorcycle wreck about 2 months ago. She said something about some detective called and they had our 40"TV, camera, and camelbak. She wasn't sure whether to believe them, and couldn't figure out how he found her, so she didn't give him any info, but got his number. I called the number and got ahold of another detective, and I was already sure it was legit, because who else has a 40" Samsung TV AND a Camelbak. I gave them our address to go check it out (they didn't know where it came from). The detective had found a picture of our building permit on the camera, looked it up on the GIS, found the owner phone number (which happened to be my parents home #), and called there.
My wife got there about the same time as the cops. Turns out our door had been kicked in, and the worthless sacks of crap had stolen our TV, 2 digital cameras (1 functionally retarded), video camera (also functionally disabled), FRS Radios, a 9mm, a box of .380 ammo, a Camelbak and a homemade clay bowl full of change. They didn't really mess anything up inside other than the change slung everywhere. Also they knocked over the bedside table when they lifted the mattress, but didn't break anything.
Turns out they had broken into at least 3 houses in our neighborhood. Someone near the first house called in the suspicious vehicle, and on the way out of the neighborhood (big, older neighborhood), the police spotted them and engaged a chase. They made it a couple miles before they got the stopsticks and crashed. They caught one guy, but the other got away. Apparently he had the 9mm and the .380 ammo.
I went down to the police station and identified our stuff. Everything was in fine shape except one small scratch in the lower right corner of the TV, and the absence of the 9mm. Even the bowl was still in good shape and full of change. We were hit about 10am, and had practically everything back by 3pm.
Of course then I had to go spend about $400 on a new door, molding, hardware etc, all night last night getting the old door frame out and the new door in. Tonight I will get to do molding and finishing, and dealing with disposing of the old door, frame, and molding.
All in all, it really didn't turn out so bad. Wife wasn't home, we got the majority of our stuff back in good condition, and we got a new door on the house. But the 5 hours I missed from work and 10-12hrs I'm losing at the shop, combined with the hassle and stress isn't making my already overloaded life any easier.
Now I've got to figure out what to do about insurance. I don't know if the deductible is $250 or $500, but between the door, gun, and lost time from work, we're around $1000. It's really not worth it, but why do we have insurance if we're not going to use it when something happens. Could I get a quote for labor for replacing the door and be reimbursed for that too?
Also, if anybody near west Charlotte is good with trim and molding and wants to come do mine, I'd appreciate it immensely.
