Can someone who is familiar with the area describe Hwys 118 & 113 from Mouth of Wilson to Wilkesboro? Is the terrain as steep and mountainous as Hwy 21, or about the same? I would be driving truck, pulling camper and wanting to avoid construction on Hwy 21. Also, I have found Hwy 21 to be very steep and nasty near Roaring Gap... especially when getting stuck behind a dump truck.

I travel hwy 21 everyday from Elkin to Sparta. If they ever finish with the construction it looks to be much better. It's been a while since I've been a while since I've been up 18 and 113. Hwy 18 is just as steep if not steeper than 21. However there is no construction going on. The construction is normally finished by 5pm

If I remember correctly, there are no pull offs on 18 between wilkesboro and Sparta and that sucker is pretty steep.

One, right before the Eastern Continental Divide. Seems kinda pointless there, at the crest of the hill. I mean, by then I've already been stuck behind the bastard for way too long!

It is wet.

Assuming you leave soon, of course.

If I remember 16 is pretty steep but has a couple slow traffic pull offs. Used to live in Jefferson but it's been a while since I've been up there...
