Alright guys, you may think this is kinda stupid but i dont. What im trying to do here is going to help me in school and get me more involved with Preserving our OHV parks in NC. I am taking a Business Communications class this summer and we have to give two speeches. One informative speech and one persuasive speech. I choose to do it on Land issues in NC reguarding closures and what we can do to prevent them (aka steeper fines and jail time for litters and abusers). The only problem i am having is finding sources from news sights and what not presenting information on the issues. I have searched and only come up with forum posts on this site and other sites, but i need something concrete. If someone out there could steer me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I put the land use press releases back up. You can look through them, or go to Blue Ribbon, Tread Lightly, UFWDA, SFWDA, etc directly.

Thanks for the quick response! i think i missed them!

They key in protecting is to be proactive, not reactive.

SFWDA was reactive on Tellico and looked what happened. Blue Ribbon is proactive on all those places out west and they've been preserved (well, as far as I can tell!).

How is one proactive? No clue. But it is where we start.

You didn't miss them, they weren't there a minute ago.

Ah aite thanks guys! If any one has any more input that would be great!

Educate me because that is how I saw it.

what you saw is what Southern had to do once all other viable options were used up. Southern has been working with the Forest Service since 1987 and before (although the weren't officially SFWDA). They helped to maintain the area to the extint the FS would let them. They followed the rules, participated on clean up days, shut down illegal trails and helped to make the trail system better. That is not a reactive approach.

Once this whole mess started and the FS did not want to take sides (even though they did IMO) Southern was essentially shut out of the planning process which ultimately closed the trail system. At that point they took all the necessary legal steps which ultimately ended with the NOI and lawsuit.

So you see, Southern was working with the FS to preserve the trail system until they started catching heat for not properly managing the forest. Instead of sticking their neck out and saying that it wasn't our doing they let it ride and let us take the heat. Meanwhile, while we're pulling maintenance on our hobby they shut it down and then and only then did we react.

Educate me because that is how I saw it.

Three bridges on trail 8 are closed due to sagging. Two bridges can be replaced with culverts and one bridge needs to be rebuilt. A section of trail 8 is closed from the bottom of the intersection with trail 9 to approximate where the old skidder (near turn to #10) is resting next to the trail. This means you cannot complete the loop on trail 8. We volunteered to do the work, but the Forest Service engineer seemed in no hurry to get the work done - maybe by next summer. Argh. We're going to keep pushing on this issue.
