injuries during wrenching

I've had quite a few. None too terribly bad. Metal in my eyes Deep cuts/gashes that kinda thing. Using a 36" pry bar to pop a coil bucket off of a tj one time. The the end of the bar poped out and hit me right above the eye and went in far enough I had to actually pull it back out. That one felt really good. Hammering on a driveshaft yoke one time to knock the joint loose and a chunk of the yoke poped off and shot into my hand in the webbing between my thumb and finger. The piece was shaped like a deck screw with a nice sharp point on the end, probably 1/4" diameter and 3/8" long. It went in so deep I didnt realize it was there till 2 days later when I noticed a dark spot in the hole. That felt even better.

All these stories make me think of a funny accident one of my buddies had working on a new 4runner. I think we could start a new thread about funny things that happened like this too. He had the rear of the frame on jack stands so the rear suspension was drooped out all the way and had his head and arms in the fender well using an air ratchet to loosen something. Well as we all know air ratchets seem to be really under powered till you get your hand pinned between it and something else. Some how it did that to him but it was beating him in the side of the head for like 45 seconds till somebody finally unplugged the air hose. All you could see was his head in the inner fender getting the shit beat out of it. Didn't really hurt him but it was pretty hilarious hearing his voice vibrate as he yelped for help.

The funniest one I had was when I was working on my old 78 TA. We were yanking the interior out and I ws trying to take out the console. I couldn't find my snap ring pliers, so I decided to do like I had done before and just yank it off as hard as I could. Well, the previous owner had not installed the snap ring. I got over it and yanked as hard as I could and I ended up slamming it into my forehead, knocking me out the door and on my back in the parking lot. I had a big round circle on my forehead and my ears were ringing for the next hour.

I also had the time I was putting the 6-spd into my Trans Am. I had placed my big 4 D-cell Maglight on top of the transmission so I could see the bellhousing bolts. Well, I forgot I left it up there so while I am under the car pushing it up to get the crossmember bolted in I hear it start falling. I had no time to react before the blunt side smacked me right in the forehead. That shit hurt too.

I'm lucky that I haven't ever seriously hurt myself working on my cars, my forehead seems to take the brunt of it.

Years ago I worked at a machine shop that built the machines that put sandwich cookies together. We got one machine almost completely assembled and someone noticed a missing nut on a roller. I was the thinnest person there ( 6'3" 150Lbs at the time) so I slithered in with a huge crescent wrench and began to install the nut.As I put the final pull on it the wrench slipped off the nut and hit me square in the forehead. I then slammed the back of my head on the steel framework of the machine and knocked myself out cold. When I came too they were gathering sawzalls and tools to take apart a $300,000 piece of equipment. I finally crawled out and laid on the cold concrete floor for a while till I could see straight. Had a lovely bruise and knot on my head for about 2 weeks.

according to some I'm a dumb ass for having this happen, only to find they did similar not long after, finding out how quickly and innocently something like this can happen.

Had a close call this weekend...was doing some routine maintenance on the OL's Edge. Decided my little brother needed a lesson in the routine stuff, since he's coming of age to drive soon. I was rotating tires, changing oil, etc. I don't have a lift, so we were working with jacks and jackstands. I made the mistake of trusting a newbie. I was popping off the oil pan plug when I saw the jack stand on the front right corner start slipping...and then hit the ground. Luckily, the jack was still relatively in position and caught the rig. Where the little bro put the stand, there's a curvature in the frame. So I got lucky.

I have a similar one. I was working on a 78 Trans Am parts car once. I was at a friend's house and was pulling the rear axle. I jacked the car up and put it on jackstands and yanked the axle and rear suspension and jacked one side up to replace the jackstand with a cinder block so I could get my tools out before calling the crusher. Well, I got under the car and pulled out the jackstand and saw I had left a ratchet under the car so I crawled under to grab it. While I was under there I heard a strange noise and noticed the jack was wiggling. I rolled out of there as fast as I could and not 1 second later the jack arm bent over and dropped the car completely flat on the ground. I don't know what would cause a jack to do that, but it definitely was scary.

Window regulator nearly cut my rt birdie finger off, was held on by tendons. Had a Jeep NV247 case fall on my head from 4 feet above, just a knot, didn't knock me out. 10 stitches in my rt palm from a 4.0 MLS intake/exhaust manifold gasket. Almost lost vision in my rt eye from grinder debris. Gashed my rt hand to the bone at DPG last year when a prybar slipped and sprung my hand into my freshly trimmed fender lip...

Like Transman, I could go on all day...

Reading a few of these reminds me of another funny one. Under the wife's Infiniti pulling the rear suspension 4 link arms. My 1/2" impact didn't have the guts to break them free, so I grabbed my trusty SK 30" 1/2" breaker bar. Situated myself under the car, put both feet on the axle, and used everything in my arms and legs, basically doing a squat on the creeper pulling on the breaker bar. Breaker bar busted at the 1/2" drive sending the handle into my gut narrowly missing more important parts, and sending me and the creeper flying across the shop floor at a high rate of speed. No real injury except knocking the breath out of me.

The wife and I were pulling the back tires off of a full size Bronco. We had it up on the trailer to make it easier to work on than rolling around in the dirt. I pulled off the drivers side rear tire and gave her the impact wrench to take off the passengers side tire. As she started to pull the tire off the jack started to slip and come my direction. Knowing that my wife is bad to put her hands in a position where they get smashed I threw myself against the Bronco with my arms stretched out hands against the quarter panel. All of a sudden the jack flew out and the full weight of the truck slammed against my left arm and dislocated my shoulder. My wife thought it had fallen on me till she heard me quietly cussing. She said the extra half second let her get her hands clear in time.

i didnt have any damage to myself but i did kill two half in breaker bars changing the king pins on my front 60 i hope i dont have to do those again any time soon

Had a 42re trans fall on my chest when bolts snapped laying under the zj trying to do install alone had to roll it off and just lay there glad it wasnt my head!!! fun stuff!!!

busted a knuckle with a slide hammer, supposed to use pliers to hold up the other end.
T case slipped and I dropped it on my head while laying on a creeper, knocked myself out.
Cutting brackets off a 4Runner the grinder bound up and flew out of my hand, cut the crap out of my arm.

A few years ago I was doing front brakes in my DD. I had the wheel off and was cranking on the ratchet for the caliper when it slipped off and smacked myself right above the right eye and blacked out for a couple seconds.

When I came around and realized what happened there was blood everywhere. The wife was out to dinner with her mom and left her phone at home. I couldn't even drive myself to get stitches because my truck was torn apart so I pinched the gash back together and used model airplane glue to hold it together. Worked pretty good actually and I didn't even end up with a scar; just nice black eye out of the deal and a big slice of humble pie.

I had to take slravene to the ER one night. He was making a bed mount for his truck and the grinder wheel bound up and blew apart. Long story short, it took a good chunk out of his stomach.

haha. this.

you make it sound like i just got a small knick :flipoff2:

There was blood spray up the wall and on the ceiling.

Gutted myself with a grinder....yup

no pics but smashed my thumb into the raised edge on a table with a 4 lb hammer (full swing above my head) while removing a driveshaft ujoint. thought i was gonna pass out for a couple of minutes from the pain/shock.

ended up with 7 stitches but fortunatly didn't break my thumb. damn thing was numb for about 2 months afterwards.

Gas

I know the eye and ear are bad, but have you ever gotten gasoline all up in your armpit because it ran down your under the truck, upreaching arm! Washing does not help much at all and it burns for hours, more if you dont hold your arm up to get some air on it! but that armpit smells OK for a few days!

PB Blaster in the eye is worse to me than gas or brake parts cleaner, and I've tried all 3. I've generally kept my injuries to mild finger smashing, cuts, and scrapes.

Pulled my front driveshaft out of my 203 equipped K-10 w/o chocks.....laying behind the front tire on a slight grade.....damn truck tried to run over my head (tree stopped it).

No damage short of skinned face & shattered pride....

I'll expand on that one a bit.A guy that worked with my dad as a pump mechanic also did automotive as a side thang.Laying under a camaro that was on ramps,he pulled the tranny.Just as he dropped it,it rolled off the ramps onto him.He didn't make it.
