I have a '78 F-250 w/o a bed, taillights "mounted" to the bumper....basically a cab & chassis.

Can this be inspected as is - assuming everything else is kosher?

I have a bed, but w/ a newborn, work, & cold ass weather, I haven't swapped it as of yet.

Just curious....

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but failed enough to know a thing or two. I think you should be good as long as you have hazard flashers, turn signals, brake lights, marker lights, and if the inspector is a real hardass, rear/side marker lights. There is also supposed to be red reflectors on the rear side and rear; this is built into factory lenses. Reverse lights are not required.
Roll up to the inspection place and ask if you'll be OK. Technically they are not supposed to answer, they aren't supposed to 'pre-inspect'.

Rear Lights shall conform to the requirements of G.S. 20-129(d).
Taillights shall not be approved if:
(1) All original equipped rear lamps or the equivalent are not in working order.
(2) The lens is cracked, discolored, or of a color other than red.
(3) They do not operate properly and project white light on the license plate.
(4) They are not securely mounted.
(c) Stoplights shall conform to the requirements of G.S. 20-129(g).
A stoplight shall not be approved if:
(1) The lens is cracked, discolored or of a color other than red or amber. Minor cracks on lenses shall not lead to disapproval unless water is likely to short out the bulb.
(2) It does not come on when pressure is applied to foot brake.
(3) It is not securely mounted so as to project a light to the rear.
(d) Vehicles shall have the lights as required by G.S. 20-129.1.

From the NC DOT inspection book.... the first one is tricky you just have to find someone who isnt a :poop:. I personally wouldnt pass it, because the lamps arent in the OEM location.

lets put it like this, If I KNOW its a trail rig, id let it go. but if its just billybob who like his truck without a bed the yea. I inspect cars with SAFTEY in mind. Another guy I work with is a hard ass, my boss and I.. not so much, you just learn your customers and also know who the Officers are

I just ran out of time before the bed swap....the other bed will go on eventually - when the ice age out side subsides - but I'm due for tags/inspection.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I've got a shop with a lift in it we can use on the weekends if that helps out any.

This does not state the lamps have to be in the stock location. It also goes as far to state "or the equivalent" which implies that all DOT approved rear lights will suffice.

I didn't see anything about a tag light. I had some jackass fail me one time when I was 17 for not having a tag light that worked.

I have inspected also in the past and you need to read what you posted! No where does it say in OEM location. It says facing to rear and OEM eqivilent. You don't have the right to fail if it isn't OEM location. You need to read!

I agree 100%, as I posted earlier.

re-read (3) in the thid post, they call it a license plate light.

I saw that but it is very confusing since the header states:
"Taillights shall not be approved if"
Then number three states:
"They do not operate properly and project white light on the tag"

That makes it sound like they don't want white light on the tag since it states they will not be approved if they do so.

It should read...They do not operate properly and do not project white light on the tag.

Correct?

They do care about tag lights, the dmv inspector at our shop said if there is a light on the vehicle factory or aftermarket it has to burn.

I can see the confusion; its legal babble, seems like they try and make it confusing.
I guess #3 is saying the tailights won't be approved if they do not operate properly...and the second part of #3 is further defining operating properly as projecting white light on the license plate.
