Inspection required for exempt vehicle?

So I have a 1984 Toyota pickup that was built in October of 1983 making it over 35 years old. I just got my registration renewal in the mail today and low and behold it says I still need an inspection. I thought in NC you didnt need an inspection after it hits 35 years old. I don't necessarily have any issues that would prevent the truck from passing, but I would prefer to not waste my time, pay the fee and tint charge if I don't have to get it. Curious if anyone else has had this issue before since I know some of us here drive older vehicles. I plan to call the DMV tomorrow, but when I got the letter in the mail today, it was already too late to call.

Theft inspection prior to issuing title.

Or it's older than 35 years.. your date of manufacture may put it after this year.

Well I've owned the truck for 6 years now and have the title issued to me so its not stolen. As far as manufacturer date, the truck was produced on October of 1983 per the firewall tag.

Model year, not production yr is what matters

Still would be 35 years old... truck is an 84 model. DMV website clearly states 35 years OR older. Regardless if you go by build date or model year the truck is 35 years old. I'm just curious if it has something to do with me living in mecklenburg county or something stupid like that. I'll just called the DMV tomorrow and hopefully get it cleared up.

I've got a laminated copy of the letter penned by then NC DMV "commish" from back in the day (carried it in the Jeep for years) after that ruling came down... 99% sure it specifies 35 years from date of manufacture

So update:

Just called the DMV a bit ago. They said my truck is indeed exempt and does not need to get inspected. They had an error in their system apparently and this has occurred to a lot of other people in my same situation. They corrected it for me. So I was able to renew it just now.

My '83 just did not say it needed an inspection on it last year, just renewed it online. That was nice, we need to just do away with inspections like SC.

I used to be an inspector, it was for work, we did it mostly for safety, make sure the lights and brakes work. I think inspection is a good thing, unlike most of us on here (that take care of their cars) most of the motoring public don't understand how dangerous they can be, not only to themselves but to others.

I used to think it was all a scam, and kinda still do--but at the same time every time I take a trip through shithole sc with all those deathtraps and broken down vehicles everywhere, I think "good job NC".
