Okay, first of all, i need to know the difference between "yellow" stickers and "blue" stickers.

I have been told that the yellow ones are for OBD I vehicles and the blue is for OBD II.

I also have been told that the yellow stickers are not electronically tracked by the state. Hence why i have not gotten a letter regarding my 7 month late inspection on the cruiser.

Since the state is going stickerless, are they still not going to track OBD I vehicles? as in, if i just take the sticker off my windshield, is the state going to send me a registration renewal card when it comes time, or how is that going to work?

lol, i should probably just cough up the 9 bucks and get it inspected but it would be nice to not even have to bother with it.

On a related note, I just got my tahoe inspected yesterday and they did not put a sticker on the window, my registration is up in July, so does that mean I have to get it inspected again before July, or am I good until July 2010?

according the DMV website you wont be forced to get your vehicle inspected more than once in a 12 month period.

The law states that no one will have to get 2 inspections within 12 months. So you are good until July 2010.

The yellow stickers are for safety inspections. Which means anything from 94 down. The blue stickers are emmisions stickers and thats the ones that have to be hooked up connected to the state. And thats from 95 and up.

Yellow stickers are for safety only(1995 and older, no actual test of emissions, just a visual check to see that all required components are in place)

Red/white/blue are for OBD2 vehicles (1996 and newer gasoline powered and under 8500 GVWR)

Also the safety inspection fees have gone up to $13.60

Emissions/OBD2 is still $30.00

You may slide by without getting an inspection now but as soon as you go to renew your plates the DMV will see that there is not a current passing inspection linked to the vin# and they will deny you your plates.

All inspections are electronically recorded with the state. The inspection computers dial through to the state computer before and after every inspection.

Just wondering if the years that only require safety inspection will go up as these vehicles get older? Im in a county that does not require it but I bet my chevy with 160k miles would not pass, and its a 98. Also is there a way I could still put a 350 in it and pass emissions? I got a 305

the years will not change. its based off the type of on board computer the car has.

you can swap in a 350 but it has to be 98 or newer and retain all emissions equipment.

Why exactly do you think it wont pass? Is the check engine light on? To stay legal and swap in a 350 you can just swap in a long block 350 and reuse your intake. Other than that you will have to get the correct injectors and a new or reprogrammed ECU to match the 350. I may have forgotten something but it's not as hard as you think it would be.

The only vehicles that are 100% exempt from any inspection are those 35 years old or older.

if your inspection is expired, but your tags are good, as of last month, you will now have to get your car inspected BEFORE you can renew your tags. I just went through this last month with my vette, which hadn't EVER had a NC inspection, and the tags expired officially as of 4 days ago(15 day grace period). I aasume I'll have the same issue with the harley this summer, I've never bothered to have any of my bikes inspected, but now i guess I'll have to play along and be 100% legit. The whole inspection system is a joke anyways, and just a money racket for the state. Do you really think a '08 is less likely to be safe to operate on the public roadways as compared to say, an old '72 farm truck held together with bailing wire! but which one requires the $30 inspection?

Sorry to hijack thread, but....

I might be moving back to NC next year. While I was still living up there (but after the last time I got an inspection) the PCM went out in my '98 XJ. I replaced it with a junkyard PCM. Will I have any problems getting an inspection since the VIN on the PCM doesn't match the VIN on my vehicle?

The inspector isn't going to look at the PCM. Hell he probbaly won't even look at the VIN plate on the dash or doorsill.
Typically they just use what's printed on your registration.

The VIN is programmed into the PCM. I think he was asking if the NC inspection computer will fail it since the VIN in his PCM doesnt match the VIN of the vehicle (whats printed oh the registration).

Have the PCM flashed to show the new VIN. Thats what we do with ours when we have to replace the PCM. And so far it has kept Mr. Inspector from asking any questions.

The inspection computer will get the VIN from the ecu if its available and sends it to DMV. The inspector does not see this happen. The DMV uses this to see if the inspector is scanning a vehicle to pass another one.

here in columbus county, we dont even do emissions test. just your regular safety inspection and you are out the door. hell, larry doesnt even check the tent.

Let him get caught once or twice and I'm sure he'll start checking everything.

we've tried to tell him. we dont even mess with doing them anymore. he handles it all under his number.

This something that the dealership can do, right? When I installed the new computer, I had to bring the vehicle up to the dealership to get the PCM flashed so it'd start. They gave me a printout of the VIN that was on the PCM, so I assume that it still has that VIN on there.

Yeah we send the PCM that is going into said vehicle to whatever dealership and have the Vin# flashed onto it then we install it from there. So far I have not had any problems inspecting the ones done that way. I may get ticketed tomorrow it but so far so good.

When did you move to GA??

I just asked our DMV rep about used PCM's last week.

He said that if the PCM VIN does not match the vehicle VIN, that a DMV enforcemment official will come check the vehicle personally. The shop will not be held liable as they have no control in the matter. As long as the vehicle was not "clean scanned" it will be no issue and the official will sign off on it.

No penalty to the shop or the owner of the vehicle as long as the inspection tech did not intentionally pass a vehicle by entering a different VIN in order to allow it to pass (clean scan).

Saftey only also applies to vehicles over 8500 pounds? (Could be off on the weight but it is close). I know my 05 GMC 2500 HD (gasser) was only safety/no emmisions. Just wrench in the system for everyone.
