Just bought a truck. Window tint is about 15% and needs to be about min of 30%. Anyone know any 'good' inspection stations I can go to in the Belmont/Charlotte area. The sticker on it was out last year and I guess this is why the guy never got it renewed. Just PM me if you know anybody that can help me out. I really hate to pull off all the tint. I would rather just take my chances and pay a ticket if it comes to that. I'll pay some boot if need be.

try another place w/ the windows rolled down, it used to work for me back in high school

^^ yep. Roll down the windows and take out the fuse.
working windows aren't required for inspection so technically they can't nab you for that.

Nice, thats a good idea. Thanks.

If you don't care about the possibility of a ticket, then roll the windows down.

Technically speaking, you don't HAVE to pull the fuse. If you roll the windows down the 'inspector' is not supposed to roll them up, but the inspector guy may not know that.

Not sure if the tint on my 99' SD is legal or not, but it is pretty dark, and I just rolled the windows down when I got it inspected.

Go somewhere that you know somebody.

Yes, it is illegal, but for the most part the CMPD and all the others in the area are a little too busy dealing with real crime to bust someone for tint. Take a look around and see how many cars in the Charlotte area have blacked out windows. Now, if you get pulled for another infraction, they'll tack on the tint ticket.

Its still illegal tint. Its a 160.00 ticket with a mandatory court appearence. Just remove it and put 35% on and you wont have to worry.

This really is the best advice. Being legal is important. Almost as much as avoiding a $160 loss...

29% is legal

since when?

NC has had a 35% law for quite awhile...but they do give a 3% margin of error...so 32% is actually legal...

some people hear the 32% and the +/-3%, and figure 29% may be legal...which may be what happened here...

Windows may not be any darker than 35% visible light transmission. This standard is considered to be met if the window tint is no lower than 32% visible light transmission when measured by the station with a photometer.

even on the vehicles I have that are legal...I always take 'em in with the windows rolled down...just to avoid the $10 added charge to inspect the tint...

if a something comes to me and its 29% or higher i pass it, as does the other guy at the dealership

No it's not. I got a ticket in Car-eh, for just that. (Further proof that Cary suck ass as if everyone didn't already know that.) They write you a ticket for illegal tint. You are supposed to have the tint removed and the vehicle reinspected, then take your recipt for tint removal and new inspection to court on your said day and the DA looks at it and says have a nice day. I happened to work a dealer at the tims so i had an RO written up to remove tint, reinspected it for the $6.50 price of a sticker, never removed the tint and went about my day.

Anyone ever been pulled in Charlotte for window tint on a 4x4? The bubbles, donks, and boxes (oh my) dont even get pulled for it....

The CMPD and SHP have too much to worry about like giving people tickets for only having 1 vehicle occupant in the HOV lane during rush your...

Maybe I have been lucky but every car i've owned has been tinted at 15% and I've never had one issue (knock on wood)...

I hate to bust your bubble but we (cmpd) just bought a whole bunch of tint meters to use on all of these illegally tinted windows. The window tint manufactures have a tolerance of + or - 3%. The tint meter has a tolerance of + or - 3% also. So If I get a reading of 28% or lower you get a ticket. Also mirrored, yellow and red tint are illegal no matter how light or dark they are.

As of a year ago when I was a certified NC inspector 35% +- 3% was legal. And they are supposed to check all of the windows for tint (up or down). But if u pick a really busy shop chances are that they wont think about rolling them up to check because they are so busy.......I live in winston and have had 15% on my ricer for 4 years.....

I have always heard that about mirrored...but (not that I have any) does that include the shadow tint that transitions from black to a little mirror?

I wish they'd make cheap purple or bubbled tint illegal...

BTW...if you find tint too dark, what do you do? just write a ticket? we had an officer in high school that would run a blade/knife diagonally across your entire window and say it better be off/changed by tomorrow...
