Inspection woes

So the local place is stating my window tint is to dark and they have no idea on the laws regarding led head lights. I asked if the used a tint meter he said no . I showed him the dot stamp on the headlights.

So other than getting upset with him where is a inspection station that is in the modern times?
@GotWood I assume this was legal tint?

The back is legal, the front windows are 1 stage below legal and the windshield is technically tinted too low .I can't help you there, but if you come to Catawba I can get it inspected. Or maybe you let me borrow it for a week or two?! Or are you interested in a TJ? You can remove the doors and then no window problem!

I hate that I sold you your Jeep back BTW. Just wanted to remind you of that again!

Can't help you on the tint issue, but getting a pair of standard halogen lights to swap in just for inspections should set you back like $20. Might be WELL worth the effort. Is that the only inspection station in your area?

Did they deny you or did they actually fail your jeep in the system?

I took my wife’s car to get inspected a few years ago after tinting all the windows 20%. I thought I had an “in” with this place as a regular but they failed it. My friend told me to go to his buddy and he’d hook me up. The guy was going to but then let me know it was failed in the system and that put a big target whoever passed it after that. I wound up taking the tint off the two front window because of this.

If you do wind up removing tint, there is a super easy way with 409 and a trash bag, no need to spend forever scraping.

I do not regret taking the tint off my front windows a minute. I dreaded driving all over trying to find a sucker to inspect it when it was over the limit. Passing the first time everytime feels like I'm cheating now!

If you can, wait till it warms up a bit and roll in with the windows down. Did this all the time on a truck i had with stupid dark tint on the front windows I was too lazy to scrape off. They never put the windows up too check...

Put windows down pull the fuse.

The JK I bought was already tinted when I bought it. Had dark tint to match the tinted soft top. I always just took the doors off.

Put windows down pull the fuse. .

Did that work for you? I had some smartass people tell me to do that with my Ram many years back, but like 77GreenMachine said, it was failed in the system. I ended up scraping it off.

if an inspector chooses to he can fail it for tampering . depends if he in good mood or not
Put a blown fuse in say the windows don’t work. I don’t know where it’s required for windows to operate, if the door itself isn’t required. BUT I’m not an official mechanic or anything.

For anyone removing window tint:
Get you a bottle of 409 or any heavy amonia cleaner. Generously spray the inside of the window, soak it down. Put a black trash bag on the wet window as if applying window tint with the trash bag. Flatten it out with a credit card. Let the car sit in the sun closed up for 15-20 minutes or more. Running with heat on full blast is needed when it’s cold out. After it sits for a while you can simply peel the tint off in one shot and wipe up the mess. Minimal glue removal is needed after this, if any at all. No need to spend forever scraping window tint off or peeling it in little strips that tear.

I’ll be doing this to my truck this summer when I’m ready to re-tint. Maybe I’ll make a video.

Why not just remove the illegal tint. Put on the 35% legal tint and call it a day. Even if you can find a place to pass your illegal tint you still are illegal in the eyes of the law. Its a class 2 misdemeanor you are committing. $240 dollar ticket and an arrestable offense.

Newspaper wetted down with the cleaner against the glass (before putting on the trashbag) helps speed things up as it helps hold wet cleaner against the glass for a long time.

I'm with this guy ^^

Personally I've never understood the value in having tint that dark that doesn't involve suspicious behavior, and it brings safety concerns at night when we're talking about front windows (not to mention LEO paranoia). The legal limit is dark enough to keep the car cool and remain discrete IMO.

Aside from the 409 trick, a method that is just as easy is to use a steamer wand, like one of the ones you use for steaming wrinkles out of clothes (I use one b/c I HATE ironing). just heat up the film for about 30 seconds in a section and it'll peal right off. Hell while you're at it use the steamer to clean your interior too ;-)

Must be a lot of shops around me that will pass anything, I see blacked out front windows and full tinted windshields every day. Not to mention all the morons that squat, you know the headlights on those clown cars can't be aimed good enough to pass inspection, but who has ever had the headlight aim checked?

Done and passed . Front tint is legal now.no issues with led headlights at new place

This is what I do with ammonia, makes it really easy unless it is completely crappy film. My buddy that tints is the one that told me about it.
