Inspection

My 96 jeep zj has been out of commission for about 4 months now with a blown up transmission. Between the 40+ hour work weeks and numerous other things, I just got to it a week or so ago. Well I'm waiting on parts to arrive to get the transmission back into the jeep so that I can get it inspected, as it was due in july. Got word a couple days ago that my grandmother passed away out in colorado, and I'm going out there for the funeral soon. What should I do about it be over due? I really don't want to pay 250 bucks, and I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to finish this thing. I have to get a new windshield and get my cat welded in before I can take it to get inspected. I guess the latter two can wait, I can just fail to buy myself more time, no?

Thanks.

If your wipers can pass over the glass of the windshield with out being damaged, run it, inspection has nothing to do with the glass other than the wipers passing smoothly.

BUT, if the wiper blades are in rough shape..........

Haha, yeah they can do that fine....

And has since started to spread. It's from the top to the bottom of the windshield now.

if it's not going to be on the road (where they'd ticket you for out-of-date inspection)...you'll be fine...

mine was due last November, and I think the letter I finally got gave me til 4/1 before the $250 would be charged...

I don't normally keep the windshield on the TJ, so I completely forgot out the inspection...you're "supposed" to get an interim letter (maybe at 90 days?) saying you're past due, but the only one I saw came early March and said 4/1 was the date...

as long as you think you'll finish it in the next 3-4 months, don't sweat it...

That's what I was figuring, but there's been so much talk about the automatic fines that if you're more than 15 days out they send you the fine of 250 bucks. Thanks!

letter

I just got my notice on my wifes car, i never driver it so I don't look at it. Her's was due in April and we just got a ltter July 15 saying we had 30 days or the fine would be kicked in.

It's 3 month's for the automatic fines, and then only if you have to be hooked up for computer emissions testing. If all you need is safety, then they don't do the $250 (or so they told me when my 78 TA was three years out still renewing the tags, but not running it on the road.)

my inspection has been out since march....

i took it to a shop that has a tow truck with a huge lift and the same size 39.5" boggers that i have.... figured if THEIR truck was inspected then surely mine should pass..... they laughed me out the door. makes me sick to be honest.... only thing mine should technically fail for is the lack of windshield wipers..... that 6" lift crap isn't supposed to apply to "occassionally offroad used vehicles" or whatever it is. ugh
