Ive got a buddy with an 02 wrangler with 31's and he wants to re-gear it to get a little more umph when wheelin' and driving around town. Im assuming its much easier to swap the gears in the axles than mess with the t-case at all? Also, are there any special tools needed to do this? I heard that we might need a press? Thanks for any tips!!

What gears are in his TJ now? I had 31's on the WJ w/4.0L and while it wasn't a drag racer, it was def. bearable and not worth the money (IMO) to regear until I was ready to go up to 33's

x2 i dont think i would waste my money on gears, especially if he plans on goin bigger in tire size anytime soon

i get tj's regeared out the door with new carriers(required if coming from 3.73 or lower) precision gears(best in business), timken install kits, synthetic fluid for $1400, it includes all parts and labor

His prolly has 3.55 stock, so a step up to 4.10 or 4.56 makes a huge difference. If he ever plans on stepping up in tire size i would recommend not putting any money into the rear axle and going ahead and swapping to a 8.8. My 8.8 swap is $1000, includes all parts and labor, you get rear discs, limited slip, and a much stronger axle

wow...thats a nice chunk of change!!!

precisions are the best in the business huh, im going to to install a set on tuesday interested to see the quality been a while since i installed any. Im doing an 8.8 disc rear on a TJ and reagearing the front. Bill will be around 1400- 1500. hard to say exactly until its done.

I dont get pissed about crap like that, I just charge what I think my time, and 30 years experience setting up gears are worth. And I also, will use Precision Gear every time I can. I hate it when the tight ass'es bring thier own Randy's, Yukon garbage in with them for me to set up, thinking they are saving $10. LOL!

yukons were good until about 1.5 years ago and then lately i don't know what happen, some i get are money and some i get are not so, i have been impressed w/ motives lately. I am kinda of fed up w/ yukons and think i am going to try precisions, As they are easy to get fast. Does anybody know what happened to yukon they were not always junk, its also like they have moisture problems in the storing facility, they have all this rust preventive goop shit on them that takes forever to get off.

I thing genuine gears are the best

*ducks and runs for cover*

Yea, I am with you on the cosmoline they put on the gears. Once you get the stuff off the gears, you cant get in off your hands.

IMO it is pointless to regear a TJ on 31s considering the gearing isn't really that off (guessing he either has 3.07s or 3.73s) Tell him to find out. If he has 3.73s tell him just to keep them till he bumps up to at lest 33s. If he has 3.07s He could go to the junkyard and get a d30/35 from a 4cyl TJ and just swap those axles in b/c the 4cyl TJs came with 4.10s. It also depends on what his future plans are with his TJ like what size tires does he want to run? I have 3.07s and 33s and it is very slugish but im in highschool so I have no money lol. Im just gonna wait it out till I have enough saved up for an 8.8 and then regear to 4.56s :driver:

Or do they put that on there so when they ship them in from India the sea air doesnt rust'em:rolleyes:
I switched Richmond last year

$1000 out the door here. I use PG or Spicers. D30 front and 35 or 44 rear. Parts, labor, synthetic fluid.

Maybe I should raise my prices... nope.
