Rolled the TJ last weekend. Insurance company called me today to tell me it was totaled. I will be keeping the TJ and collecting a check from insurance. If I understood the Insurance guy correctly, he told me that the title will become a salvage title.
Are there any special inspections or restrictions on vehicles with a salvage title?

Nope, nothing special. Some insurance companies wont give you collision coverage on a salvage. I am driving one that my wife has totaled twice. Bought it back both times and got a free all over paint job out of it both times.

Whoa!? I would have never guessed they would have totaled it. I thought the damage was pretty minor. Hopefully that fat insurance check will make for some nice upgrades!

On top of some insurance companies not wanting to carry collision/comprehensive I believe it is more difficult for buyers to get a loan on them.

The main reason I don't mess with salvage title vehicles is that I rarely own one for more than a few years and they are the biggest PITA to sell. I had a 1991 BMW 318is with a salvage title that took months to sell. It was clean, drove straight, and had a fresh paint job, but people acted like it was going to burst into flames and kill their family if they drove it. A minor fender bender will total a $1600 car, but wouldn't be a big deal on a $20k car. Some people just have thick skulls, but you can't change it so you might as well accept it.

I certainly don't feel that way, but I know the headaches that will come with any salvage title vehicle so I choose not to deal with them. If you're in this vehicle for the long haul and not looking to sell anytime soon then you can certainly come out ahead.

If your wanting to have collision on it just change insurance companies. I bought a total wreck; fixed it and put full coverage on it no questions asked. No I didn't divulge that information nor did they ask. I did use that insurance one minor time because I had a cut in the side wall of a tire and assumed someone knifed it. They paid no questions asked. Don't know if they would've paid for another total loss though.

I'm glad you did this w/ the insurance. You will come out way ahead as long as you keep your nose clean for a couple years.

Technically you can't total a vehicle twice, once totaled, it's simply worth less. If you were to set a salvaged titled vehicle next to one just like it, all other things being the same, which would you pay more?

I dont know if yall remember, but back in the day, when my jeep slid down the hill and hit Hundly's jeep, My ins. co. paid me nearly 6 thousand dollars to fix mine...and I had only paid 13,000 for it. They also paid Hundley some money...cant remember the amount.
And my rates never went up at all! But as soon as I got one more ticket...they dropped me like a hot potato. For some reason(which was great) the new ins. co. had a cheaper premium than the one that dropped me. I thought I made out pretty good on that deal.

I work in the insurance industry and bougt a 05 Trailblazer a few years ago that was a totaled rebuilt it and insured it with AllState and advised them it had a salvage title and they had no issue.

Some companies will insure it with a salvage title, just don't expect to get paid the same price as one with a clean title, if you "total" it again.
