We're doing the annual whirlwind tour of NC starting tomorrow, part of which involved staying w/ wife's parents (ugh) Fri-sun.
They recently moved to southport, a bit south of Wilmington.

Any suggestions on interesting things to do or see while in the area?

Too bad they moved away from Southern Pines, Darren and I had started a tradition of visiting URE in his FJC on the day before Easter :D

From Southport you can take a ferry to Bald Head island for the day. Golf, fishing, etc. Provision Company is an old timey seafood place in Southport for good eats.

X 2 on the Bald Head trip. It's been a long while but the golfcart paths and walking trails through the maritime forest/marsh side are beauitifull.

3X Bald Head. My dad has house on Oak Island. I spent 8 summers down there while growing up and working. Worked on B-H for the last 5 of them and loved it. Took my wife just last Summer over the ferry to BH just for a day and she's still talking about it.

This, you can't beat Provisions for an awesome lunch, especially their grouper salad. If you are in the mood for a hot dog, Trolley Stop is great in Southport. You can take the ferry over to Bald Head like he said, or up to Ft Fisher/Carolina Beach and drive out on the beach.

South Port to the Ferry, over to Fort Fisher, Tour the museum and grounds, go look at the wall built with slave labor to funnel any ships close enough for the canons to hit. From there, the NC aquarium. Easy to spend a few hours there. Up from there you have the Beaches of fort fisher and Carolina beach If you have a 4x4 you can go drive out on the beach. Then there's always a short drive up Wilmington to visit the USS North Carolina

isnt there somewhere you can drive on the beach at carolina beach..or wilmington vacinity? for some reason, im thinking there was.

Freeman park is on the northern end of Carolina Beach and is 4x4 access. Ft Fisher is on the southern end of the island and has 4x4 access

EDIT - Just caught the sarcasm as I was rereading your post. Sarcasm is lost in type.

lol, no sarcasm. i thought i had remembered doing this back in high school. but just assumed like anything else fun it had been shut down.

A few years ago i took my Tundra out to Freeman park and let my 2 year old niece drive for about a mile. She sat on my lap and worked the steering wheel and all I did was work the throttle. The ruts wont let you out easily for the first 1/2 mile or so and the rest is so wide that even if she started to head towards somebody, I had plenty of time to react. She absolutely loved that.

Nope, you still can, like he mentioned either on the north end at Carolina Beach/Freeman park or south end at Ft Fisher. It's not shut down, but the rate did go sky high recently, IIRC it is $20 a day now, but I think you can get a yearly permit, ~$100 or so I think.

Go to Fishy Fishy in Southport for a shrimp po-boy. Then go to the aquarium. Next go to Fishy Fishy and have a shrimp po-boy. Repeat the po-boy part as much as you possibly can.

Shrimp po boy at Fishy Fishy is good, but grouper salad sammich next door is way better

You have to eat at the provision company in southport. There is a light house on oak island that is open for tours but check for a schedule of when it is open. Ride the ferry from Southport to Ft. Fisher.

take 133 north out of South Port and stop in at Old Brunswick Towne/Fort Anderson. Nice location right on the river with alot of history.Earth works are very well preserved and the museum is nice.12 dollars gets you on the beach at Ft.Fisher.
