Can anybody on here do internal key ways?

Do they sell tube that already has it cut on the inside.

I need some parts made and my local guy cannot or does not want to cut internal key ways

Thanks

Most any machine shop around can broach a simple keyway in a tube. You could even do it youself with a press. Have you checked mcmaster to see if they have what you need?

What are the dimensions on the tube?

It is on a briggs and stratton engine with a 1" shaft.
So it is something in the order or 1.0030 I.D. 1.5" Deep(on one end) then .875 I.D. 1.5" deep with a 1.250 O.D.(however this OD needs to be as small as possible)
Total length is three inches with two different I.D.
I think with a 5/16 key on the big end and a 1/4 key on the small end.

The keyway on the big end would be very difficult to manufacture. Could it possibly be welded and then remachined back to round?

Another option is a split shaft with clamps, but sounds like there isn't enough room.

it could be two pieces that are welded together.

It'll have to be... because nobody makes a stepped bore 1"-.875" Rigid Shaft Coupling (the actual name of the part you need)

Your fastest/cheapest/best bet is to order a 1" bore & a 7/8" bore, have them aligned, welded, and the length/OD turned down...

If you make it two pieces, and have the smaller one press fit into the larger one, then you can weld them with a minimal amount of distortion. Leave about 0.100" stock on the ID and OD of each, broach the keyways, weld together, and then machine to finish size. I would offer to do it, but I don't have the equipment to broach it.
