Hey guys, I'm new to offroading. I've only been 4-5 times.. and all of those times it was at Uwharrie. You may have seen me I was the crazy fool offroading my crew cab Ford Raptor. I've come to really enjoy it and so has my family. So now I'm looking to stop risking the Raptor and get a trail rig, something I can putz around town in too.

I haven't full decided between a Wrangler and a 4Runner. If I were to get a Wrangler I'd probably want something after 1997. If I were to get a 4Runner, I'd have to go with an old 22RE motor and a 85-87 year range. I had an 86 4Runner and I loved it, but had to get rid of it a while back.

What do you guys think?

Also, I came across this craigslist post while looking at wranglers and noticed this guy's NC4x4 sticker. (http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4163565865.html) Any idea who this is?

The TJ you linked above will do pretty much everything at Uwharrie, except the big line on Kodak, etc.

The 4" short-arm kit might give you some headaches when it gets really twisted up.

Asking Jeep or Toyota is like asking Ford or Chevy. You get a whole lot of opinions on why one is better than the other, and then a whole lot of opinions on why the previous opinions are wrong :D. Bottom line is they are both very capable rigs with TONS of aftermarket support, and you can't really go wrong with either. Personally I wouldn't buy either, but I'm a full size guy.

Can't go wrong with either, but if you are going to be driving it to and from the trails with your family, I'd go for the newer option (97+ Wrangler).

More room for a full family + gear in a 4runner.
4Runner topless is cool, but unless you get a $$$ soft top its kinds of a PITA to deal w/ removing/replacing the hard top. Getting into the back seat w/ it on sucks.

Fawk...you drive the crew cab Raptor?
You've got coin. The onyl option is a Brand new 4 door Wrangler lifted right and tons of aftermarket money thrown at it.
:D

Yeah the tj has close to zero storage if you plan to have more than 2 people. I secretly want a 4runner...

I love my TJ, but TJ and room for the family just don't go together. I have to be smushed up pretty good to get the car seat in the back of my wrangler. Barley any room for my tools and camping gear even without the car seat.

Toyota… but im biased, have you looked into an xj? If it were me ide go toyota bc of price, theyre easy to work on, and the stock parts are super durable compared to a dana axles thats came in the jeep

I found a 97 Wrangler with a rear Ford 8.8 swap w/ Aussie auto locker and a Dana 44 front with air locker. 4" lift on 35s. Lots of upgraded components... Currie steering kit, track bar, etc... Tummy tuck, skid plates, rockers etc...

I'm really happy with my purchase. The electrical stuff on it needs some work, and it cut out on me on the trails last weekend; but I hoping for a cheap fix and be back on the road.

If he's really got the itch, he doesn't need another pile.... All he needs is my phone number :smokin:

I'm keeping the Raptor, which is why I can't buy a brand new one.. Even if I could I wouldn't. I wanted a rig I can fix on the trail. Too much electrical crap on the newer ones.

So it turns out I lied.. I traded in the Raptor and got an LJ.

As Purchased...

Having owned (not a wheeling rig though) a TJ, I would recommend some kind of long arm kit when you get the bug to do suspension work. The short arm system was great when it first came out, but it was being compared to a leaf-sprung yj.
