iPad as infotainment Screen in Car

So I have an older ipad that doesn't get used much and was thinking about trying to figure out a way to mount in my my 2017 Jeep Cherokee and use it as much as I can instead of using the small screen it comes with. I currently have Apple music and I usually just hook my phone up and listen to music that way, which is fine, but wondering if I could get more use out of an Ipad being mounted in the car...My question though is, I am also wanting to be able to listen to the radio and ideally would be nice to be able to control that from the iPad itself. I can control track skipping and volume with my steering wheel, so not being able to turn the volume knob, wouldn't be a problem and could possible control the volume from the ipad directly. I've looked up a couple of things, but haven't found exactly what I was looking for. Any one have any idea if this is doable?

You can find stuff to do it, only issue is the summer time, ipad will say over heat if left in car. I use to use one as a video source in the truck and now use a tivo to stream stuff.

Can I have it setup where I can get actual Local FM radio channels on it via bluetooth? This is a WiFi only model, which is why Apple music would be perfect, but then things like navigation I guess wouldn't work at all if there isn't a contstant Wifi network while driving.

There are probably really good aftermarket options out there:

I added Android Auto/Apple Carplay to my car a few weeks ago. This retains all of the OEM radio/nav/bluetooth, and just adds in additional functionality through another menu. The Apple Carplay works great. The Android Auto side is almost perfect except there is no way to pan the map. I think this is a bug, and this thread prompted me to email them, thanks :D

@Andy J. has used it and may have some better Apple/iphone specific feedback since he is one of youpeople.

This was the original idea, but since I already own the ipad and would probably only costs me mounting to the car and any small cables I don't already have. I have seen where someone has done this before but I can't remember where I saw it.

Also wondering if there is a way to download navigation maps to use offline? i.e. load a map while at home on the iPad and then be able to use the navigation while driving without having Wifi or be connected to mobile data?

hot spot off your phone

Iheartradio has FM stations that are members, and will stream their channels through the app. For Android there are other apps that will play FM stations that have streaming/online presence. I dont know about apple though.

edit: ROCK92 has an app on android. I assume they does on Apple as well.

This. If you have an Apple phone, you can set up a link between the two, and the ipad will autoconnect to your phone whenever close.

Also, eventually your Ipad will not receive Apple updates anymore. When this happens, it is only a matter of time before the apps stop working. Not sure the age of your device, just giving a heads up.

Ah, I didn't even think of this. Might be too much trouble to get this to work the way I want too. Just thought it'd be a cool way for me to recycle this under used iPad.

Lots of internet radio - Google is your friend, plus many "music" apps can tap into stations too. Tunein.com I use occasionally, which has apps for iOS, Windows, Android, and a browser (Chrome) interface. Local stations plus things like monitoring police channels etc.

I've been thinking of something similar, to include sort of a go-bag type usage scenario where might be a backup communication device, maps, email, etc. More reliable than a standard laptop (maybe).

Magic Earth is a navigation app that is free and open source. You download maps for the states you choose and it doesn’t require a data connection. Does the iPad have a GPS?
