I am looking into making an app for the iPhone that would allow you to decode the door code stickers on cars and trucks.

While trying to decide the layout of the app and learning how to program it, I was wondering what you as a user would expect it to do / want it to do. This is just now in the planning state so it might take a little while to put together. Just something that I thought would be handy to have. I know I've needed it quite a few times while out on one of the junk yards. An app would have been much faster than doing a web search on my phone.

Looking forward to your input.

Apple sucks for mobile app development. Its going to cost you to even get their approved development software

Whatever it does, I'd like to see it work for Android. :D
While not out of the question, and it is a possibility, I only have iPhones to test with and thus why I am starting with iPhone/iPod/iPad.

The software is free, but it does cost $99.00 per year to be a registered developer which is required to submit the application for review and for distribution. While some people may not like this as it does reduce the number of applications available, it also greatly reduces the number of viruses and 12 year olds throwing together something so they can say they wrote an app.

I do plan on looking into Android in the future, but for now I will be focusing on iOS.

What about adapting/designing the "scan" app to direct to the Vin bar scanner database?

I tried scanning the bar code with the app and it seems to be too wide to read it.

Barcode reading is one thing I'm researching to be able to do, but I don't think that VIN number decoding will be in this program. Trying to stick with door tags for now.

Nope. I used to program 25 years ago but nothing since then. It's going to take some research and learning, but I think I should be able to do it.
