I just got a call on my cell phone from someone claiming to be the IRS and had all my info...address, previous addresses, income, kids names etc.. They gave me badge numbers all sorts of stuff and said I owed $5200 from 2009-2014 and I needed to pay today or they would send someone out to arrest me. It sounded really official and scared the shit out of me, I know there have been lots of people to pay the money but I did a quick search while I was on the phone with them and saw where the phone number appeared to be a scam.
The number is 206-701-6605 if someone knows how to really find out what that number is I'd appreciate it and beware! Part of me still is wondering if this really is the IRS. I've had dealings with them before and it didn't go much differently than this call. Except he wanted payment or he would send someone to arrest me, wtf?

They have to give you notice before they can arrest you. The IRS is good about sending certified mail if they really need to get ahold of you. If the address they have is correct, then ask why no notifications or certified mail???

They would put a lien on your property way before arrest. Just be careful.

Add 202-820-1272 to the list of numbers that will try to pull that shit. I got the same call last week but threatening a lawsuit if I didn't pay that day. It left an automated message but never stated the amount or what dates I owed money for or a way to contact them back.

The last run in I had with them I got up to 15 certified letters a day saying we owed close to 30k...after a year of dealing with them and hiring an attorney, we proved the error was on their part not ours. We got a letter saying we owed nothing in the end. No apology, no compensation for the cash I had to shell out to an attorney to prove the IRS was at fault. So yeah, I'm scared to death of them and their incompetence.

I only liked this post because there is no "Hate the truth put forth in this post" button.

Now that you have put me on guard, I hope that they call me :D. I'm going to go ballistic on them and threaten to kill them, lol.

In a case like that, if you proved them wrong, can you not file a suit against them to get your money back for attorney fees and such?

Maybe we could but when we brought that up to our attorney he suggested we let sleeping dogs lie....
Unless you've dealt with them you really wouldn't believe what goes on. We had a mediation with our accountant, bookkeeper , attorney, myself and business partner on a conference call with the IRS agent and no one in the room could understand the first agent we were assigned to. We had to hang up and call back twice to get someone who didn't speak broken english with a heavy accent. Several times in our conversations on the phone with agents of the iRS we were told to simply pay the fine and that was our only recourse, it was the most frustration thing I've ever been through in my life , I've never felt so helpless in any situation. We were told over and over we were guilty until we could prove otherwise. I lost sleep, stopped spending money to improve our business, didn't buy any investment properties because I kept thinking the fines were mounting and we were falling deeper in the hole if we couldn't prove them wrong.I would go to the mailbox and several times a week I was greeted by the mailman with a stack of certified mail from the IRS threatening to levy accounts, seize assets all sorts of stuff, when we got a letter saying it was over I was so happy I really didn't care about the $$$ I'd spent to be done with it.

There is nothing quite like the IRS crawling up your ass with a microscope...... been there done that..... I will pay a CPA to deal with them from now on as long as I can afford it.

that is the telltail sign.
Rachael has an aunt that is an IRS agent. Although they can be jerks and hound you, they do NOT demand payment today and do not have the authority to have you arrested immediately.
By law they must provide it all in writing before any action can be taken.

It is a scam...just did more research , but holy cow they had all sorts of information.
btw if you really think about it and know where to look, most if not all of that is available in public databases.

A quick way to confirm if it's the IRS - ask them how much your filing amount (refund or payment) was for the last 3 years.

I can relate to the feeling of just being happy things are over with the IRS. I've never had anything like @BIGWOODY is mentioning above but we have a recurring situation involving my folks. My parents are in their late 70's now and have moved to NC about 10 years ago from Michigan. About 7 years ago my mother got a letter from the good ole IRS saying she owed 53K in taxes. My folks are just simple people and have little income and very simple tax situations (basically social security and a small amount of straight forward investment income). The letter listed several 1099 based incomes that she supposedly had received. It was very confusing at first because they were all construction related 1099's (plumbers and electrical work) and all were from businesses that were in the same area of Michigan where they used to live. My first suspicion was this was identity theft by some sub-contractor that did the work and he had used my mom's SSN. So what to do. The good IRS has this policy of guilty until proven innocent and I had no idea what to do. I started making calls to the places that issued the 1099's. Well you can imagine how ready they were to talk to me when I called from NC just asking financial questions about their business and taxes. Finally someone talked to me. Long story short, my mothers SSN is the same 9 digits as a contractors tax ID number. The only different is a social is XXX-YY-ZZZZ and the tax ID is XX-YYZZZZ format. The other part that made this all go squirrely was the business name was Johnson construction and my parents last name is Johns. Thus the IRS uses a short hand of the first 4 letters of your name (JOHN in this case for BOTH). So it all matched up for those fucking government paper pushers. I was able to show all the numbers and write a very detailed and cordial letter to the IRS. I got the same response as above - that my mom didn't owe anything - but never and apology. Well it has now happened 2 more times (about every other year it seems to happen now). So I draft up a similar response using the current numbers for the year and send them a letter. My dad is livid about it and wants it fixed. I told him this has to be a one in a billion coincidence of the name and numbers matching and there was no way these fucking idiots could ever fix this. It's no biggie anymore since I know what is going on but that first time was a total mess to figure out. %IRS.

My wife called me a couple of weeks ago. She was freaking out...she had come home to a fake IRS message. Said we owed 3500.00 and had to pay within 3 days. I told her if it were real, we should have received mail, to which she argued, they probably don't use mail anymore. I just laughed and told her to make sure she was at home on that 3rd day, so she'd be home to pay them. She has since Googled everything..lol

When I get an unknown #, & usually distant area code, I Don't answer it. I Do google it, just as I did the one that called you. There will be a whole list of complaints on that #. First reply to your's, Was fake IRS call.
Most of what is going around Now, is the American Heart Assoc, soliciting. Thousands of complaints! And their Robo, is dialing faster than a Live agent can pick up. Most of their calls to me, have been hangups.
How Desperate do you have to be, to work telemarketing?:flipoff:

My wife just got the scam phone call this morning. She had seen it on FB, so knew it was going around and politely told them to fawk off. What she found interesting is that the call came from Washington DC.

I do not answer my phone if I do not recognize the number. I let them leave a message, but most times they don't.
