is an auto np231 the same as a manual np231?

The problem with an answer to your question is, well, that it really doesn't answer your question. That's because we have no idea what you need to put it in and what it came out of ...
 
i believe everything older then 91 were all 21spl, and then 4cyl were 21 spl and 6 cyl 23 spl...

the 21 spl input is interchangable with the 23 spl one, if youre just swapping out 231s
 
sorry-i have a 97 xj with an ax15 and 231. i am thinking of putting in a 231 out of a 98 with an aw4. both 4.0L's
 
No. the input splines are the same but the length of the input is different. The autos have a little longer input than the manuals. Thats why Tera offers a seal "extension" for its teralow kit for autos. Some guys are looking for the auto planetary inputs so they can add clocking rings and still have enough spline engagement. I'm not sure its ALL the autos though.
So the answer is it MIGHT bottom out. Measure the length of the input.
