Is Checking Gear Pattern Necessary??

I'm going to be installing a grizzly locker in an 8.8, and I read somewhere that there is no need to check the gear pattern only the backlash. Is this true? I know I will probably check the pattern anyway, just wondering if it is really required.

I will be using the same gears that are in the carrier now, and therefore will not be messing with the pinion. Therefore the pinion depth is set and all I should worry about is the correct shim thickness for the backlash, right?

I usually check the backlash before and then after just to verify its still the same. If the backlash is the same +/- .001 I'd run it and not worry if it were mine

I've done two Detroits and both times I used the same shims and checked the backlash before and after and the change was negligible or within spec. I patterned one just for kicks and pattern was good.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up using the original shims and it seems to only change the backlash by about .002" in the direction closer to spec. This was my first time measuring backlash, and may be its just me, but there seems to be a lot of factors that could affect the measurement by +/- .001 or so.

I took it around the block just to make sure everything was operating normal and it did not make any abnormal sounds. I will take it on more of a shakedown run later this week as a final test.
