Thanks for the advice. I ended up using the original shims and it seems to only change the backlash by about .002" in the direction closer to spec. This was my first time measuring backlash, and may be its just me, but there seems to be a lot of factors that could affect the measurement by +/- .001 or so.
I took it around the block just to make sure everything was operating normal and it did not make any abnormal sounds. I will take it on more of a shakedown run later this week as a final test.
