Is it free to camp at URE?

Well me and a group of friends are going camping in URE for the first time this weekend. I read all the info on the entrance to the trails, but just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything wrong. First, are all of the campsites off of the trails free, or do you have to reserve and pay for some? If so how do you know which ones are free or not. Also what are some the rules out there that I might not know about? I know there is no alcohol allowed. What about campfires? I've seen pits out in the campsites while offroading. Do you have to bring your own wood, or can you just use any old wood that has already fallen? I realize that I can't go out there and start chopping trees down, but figured I could use dead wood that is laying around. Also is there anywhere to fill water jugs, or do you need to bring all you plan to use? Thanks for any tips or advice.

Later,

Darren

It's my understanding that Primative camping on the trails is free, just pack it in and pack it out, leave no trash or sign that you were there.

But Arrowhead, Group Camp and those have fees.

Thanks for the info. Growing up I was in boy scouts and used to go camping once a month for about 6 years, so I know all about camping etiquette, I'm just not sure if I can spell it :D. If anyone else has any other info it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Darren

If you come early and set up tent then you will get the site.. I can not tell you how many times we passed a camp site and thought we would come back later for it to be gone

i usually stay at hunt camp. its 5 bucks a night for a site, close to the trails and close to the outpost, plus its on a map so you can say "hey, lets all meet at hunt camp" and no one has to go "wheres that?"

If you are camping on the trails, you need trail passes, for the arrival day and departure day and any days in between.

Thanks for the info everyone, keep the tips coming if you think of anything else. I'm going to call the ranger station tommorrow. None of the websites for uwharrie have any specific information. At least if they do I haven't found it.

If you go to the forum link that I posted and do a search for camping, there's a bunch of links with pics, fee info, site info, etc. for each camp site.

I saw that, but I don't know which campsite is which out there. Plus the one's I'm looking into are the free ones out in the trails. There's not much info on that, it just said that general dispersed campsites are free, be careful with your campfire, and pick up your trash. Maybe there is no "list" of rules or quidelines and it's just really that simple?

Pretty much, yup.
Hike. Find a place that will do the job. Pitch a tent. Clean up when you are done. Enjoy the next day.

One thing to remember if you like to have a few beers at the end of you trail ride at the camp site. By the rules of the trail no alcohol is allowed on the trail. I was told by the rangers this includes camp sites along the trails. If you are just looking for a place to pitch a tent then just drive the trails until you find a spot open enough for all your stuff. Make sure you have enough room to safely and legally get all the trail vehicles off the trail. Also be ready to hear people coming by all hours of the night in trucks and atv's/bikes. trails are open 24/7. I normally just drop the $5-$10 on a site. It is less hassle. You have water at most of them and decent restrooms. Some even have showers. I also dont like the idea of either leaving my stuff at the trail sites or packing it all up in the morning and dragging it around with me.

there is no alcohol allowed anywhere in uwharrie, unless the rules have changed.

Thanks again for the info everyone. I was not crazy about leaving my stuff unattended in a campsite all day, but for this trip we have more people the available seats in the 4x4's so there will be people there all day. Looks like I'll be running the uwharrie shuttle bus! :D I was not planning on bringing any alcohol out since I'll be behind the wheel a lot. Do they come around checking coolers and campsites, or do you have to be getting out of hand to earn a visit from the rangers?

Isn't that entire county a dry county. I remember having to drive really far to get beer. Not that we were drinking at the campground. Arrowhead has showers. Electric and non electric sites. I hope you all have a great trip. I was there last weekend. And it even rained while we were wheeling on Saturday. That made it really fun. Wish I wouldn't have broke my rig before the rain. But at least I got to ride with some one else.
