hey, anybody know if its illegal to remove the dang eyesores that arrive about this time before elections? they're ugly , basically litter as far as Im concerned, and on the positive side; make GREAT paper target holders. the crooks (politicians) dont remove them on the election is over, so I figure that Im just cleaning up a little early.

I take all signs down that are put up in my yard, except for the one for the church that is in my deed that it be there.

these are at the entrance to my neighborhood. I wouldnt take down a girl scout brownies for sale sign, or a church BBQ, but come on we all know the politicians are crooks.

wasnt there a story the last election where some guy collected as many as he could find and took them to a recyclery, or held them for ransom or something?

New State Law, effective October of 2011, actually protects those trashy campaign signs within a highway right-of-way (aka within 3 feet of the pavement), so it is actually a misdemeanor to remove a lawfully placed sign. However, they are only protected 30 days before early voting starts and must be removed within 10 days of the election. Anything outside that window is simple litter and is fair game. There are some other little guidelines for the signs but they are reliant on the NCDOT to enforce them, which they won't because they have neither the manpower nor the interest. The most important condition is that the adjacent property owner must consent to their placement in the ROW in front of their property.

So all the cities and towns that had rules to prevent this kind of clutter are now scratching their heads since the State law trumps the local ordinances. So get ready, this year will be a bumper crop for political garbage, in more ways than one.

But hey, go ahead and pull em up. I won't tell anybody. ;) And if anybody says anything, just tell them you work for that campaign and you're relocating the signs to a higher traffic/visibility area.......then chuck em in the trash.

Back in 08 me and my buddies would break off in to teams and see who could collect the most and return before time ran out(30 mins). Then we would put all of them in someones yard. Legal? Dont know. Fun? fuck yeah

That sounds like a fun idea to me. Ive had a few put out in the front of my neighborhood entrance. I just take them and shoot them with my bow for target practice.

I say leave the signs and target practice on the politicians .....
