i have a 88 yj and have 4.56 gear is it right now runnin 35/36s. It has stock 30 and 35 axles in it. The Dana 35 is a Super 35 with USA Alloy axles it it. My question is is it worth it for me to regear it with 4.88s to run 37s?

I really dont want to run them with the 4.56s cause i have to ride the clutch in first to get started. I do the occasional uwharrie trip and wheelin but nothing hardcore.

No.

No x1000. I am surprised your d35 has held up to 36s as it is.

The D30 will survive if you are easy on it, but upgrade the shafts as you break them. The D35 is lucky to have survived this long, but if you really want 37's, I'd consider swapping the D35 out for a Ford 8.8 or similar beef.

8.8 is an easy, low cost, if you do it yourself, swap on a xj and will add a lot of beef in the way of strength over a D35.

FWIW, It's also pretty easy in a YJ. :D

Yes all the internet gods will tell you that your 35 will die. I've seen them die, mine still hasn't. Now its on alloys and I beast the shit out it. Clearly you're easy on the throttle...well smart on the throttle like me or you wouldn't be rocking that 35 still. I'd honestly be more worried about the front 30 lasting then the 35. I don't know how either of my shit is still working on 35's, but I think 37's will eat that 30 alive.

Screw what everyone says... I'll eat those words the day my D35 has epic diarrhea hahaha

Meant to ask, is it 4cyl or 6cyl?

its a 4.0, and i just rebuilt the top end and put a cam, header, injectors and bored the out the throttle body on it.

Ive got a d44 rear thats just sittin at my house. Should i built that or look for a 8.8 or 9in? Its just money wise right now is tight and should i look for a d44 front too?

D44 is a good axle. I have a personal preference toward a 9" just because they are easy to work on and you can get any locker/shaft/gear combination for it. The 8.8 is the easiest swap unless the D44 you have is already 5x4.5 pattern

No way would I run 37's on a D35. I have seen and even helped too many people over the years at URE with broken D35's with much smaller tires than that. I once saw two people with broken D35 shafts on the same weekend.

i mean i might as well change it the 5 on 5.5 because if i even do, do a d44 swap in the front i am not goin to be able to get 5 on 4.5 for it anyways right?? ill just buy 2 5 on 4.5 rims i mean they are only 50 bucks each.

I wouldn't waste your time on the 35. As said, an 8.8 would be the most efficient route given your current set up. However, if your looking to go bigger I'm selling a rear Dana 60 that just recently came out of my yj if your interested.

ment to say 5 on 5.5 rims on my previous post

and what gears and such are in the 60? is it full width or standard?

When I broke my D35 for the 5th and final time, I went to a full width D60 rear. I kept the front D30 and ran 8 lug wheels all the way around. I made custom 2" spacers that adapted from 5x4.5 to 8x6.5 to help even out the width, and allow me to have all 8 lug stuff. The problem with different pattern wheels is you don't know which to carry a spare for. I still have the spacers, ran em for tens of thousands of miles with no issues, but now I have a D60 in the front also.

I have a complete 9"(3.50 gears) with 5 on 5 1/2 pattern for $100. Just a thought.

I'd throw that d35 on somewhere like ju. They will pay a fortune for it!

On my yj I went with an 8.8, 4.56, ruffstuff brackets. Grabbed the axle for 200 with decent discs complete. You just need the adapter for the yoke/shaft (can't remember the spicer part)
