Saw a TV repairman, at the Bank, & he followed me home, to view my Projection TV Set. Been having color problems, & outline haze, for 6 months. I've been hoping it just needed the magnets, reset. Set hasn't been touched, since I bought it, 6-7 years back. Well he tells me I have a "convergence" problem.
And, the 3 projection bulbs, have a "Fluid" in them. I Think what he said, is they have leaked between them, or something like that. He can clean them out, & I guess, refill & reseal them. But to correct both problems, will be $300-$350. He's also wanting to show me some Sweet deals, on some used/repaired sets! I've checked him out, & his company, BBB, Angie's list, Reviews. Kinda of a mixed bag of reviews.
MY Question is, do the Bulbs, Really have a Fluid in them, or is he trying to sell me Blinker Fluid?

I don't know but you can get halfway decent LCD TVs now for $500 so I don't see why anyone would invest money in a giant projection set...

same fluid used in turn signals on european cars. it's cheaper to buy at an auto store. Call around and ask first though. Hard to tell where the best deals are gonna be. Just ask for blinker fluid.

on a serious note, drain and change the glycol or "CRT coolant". never done it myself, but looked into it one time. It seems it can be done yourself and can get the stuff online

Yup..... Just buy a new one. What you are going to have done is only a bandaid. You can buy a new tv for little more than he is gonna charge. And get a better picture to boot.....

Agree with these guys.
For $300 you can get a solid 40" LCD these days. And shoot it will have an ROI because it will literally use half the power of those old projections

Just in case buying a new one isn't in the budget being so close to Christmas, here is something that will help. If you have a the factory remote, go into settings and look for Convergence adjustment. It will bring up a screen that is a bunch of little t's. Look for red and blue lines on the outside of the white t's. Then select either red or blue and use the arrows on the remote to move the red/blue t's until they line up perfectly on the white t's. That is how you " converge " a three gun projection tv, it's a normal service issue that I used to perform yearly for my customers who had those type of tv's. Even with a properly functioning convergence board, the guns will always wander a little bit over time.

As stated above. However if that does not work, then your TV guy is right. I had the fluids changed on my projection a few years back. ( happen to know the guy and got an after hours cash discount) after watching him change the fluid and clean the lamps, it is very doable now that I have seen it done. I don't think I would do it without having seen it done though. Back then the LED were expensive so I fixed it. Today, would have chunked it. Just upgraded to a new LED and the pictures are night and day x a million. My suggestion would be to upgrade as well. Just saw some 40" LED 1080p at Walmart for $298.

Thanks to All! I did look up changing the glyco. Read some forums. I don't feel comfortable with trying to change out the fluid, 1 mistake, & it's junk. Retro, I see the convergence IS something I can do.You know, the TV guy wasn't going to explain that "Problem". As for all the new Cheap sets, & Walmart, best be very careful What you buy! It's All throw away sets, & you get what you pay for. I will check out the used sets, & dwell on what I feel is Best for me! Thanks for all the advice & info; Merry Christmas, everyone! :)

Just so we're clear - the $300 WalMart TVs may be questionable, but for $500 if you dig around online you can get a perfectly good TV w/ all the Smart TV features etc.
Hell 4 years ago I bought a 54" plasma for only $700 delivered and things have crashed since then.

The TV MFRs are in kind of a pickle now b/c the market has been flooded w/ good, cheap TVs and most people have upgraded already... so the demand is no so high anymore - once you have a good TV, you;re set for years. So this has really driven the prices down, and why they now include lots of extra features...
Hell just check Craigslist I'd bet you could get one locally from somebody who has upgraded for less than the cost of that repair.

10 years ago i bought a $2500 50" tv that i could get today for $500. price isnt everything.

OK, you made me Look it up! Bought it in May, 2005, on my Birthday! I passed by those $2000-2500 sets, & paid $800, for the 53" Projection Magnavox. Another $150 for 5yr ext. warranty, & $65, for the best video cables.
The last Analog set I had, lasted 13 years, so I guess, I've been Lucky on this one. For $600 - $800, I sure Hope a new set, Would be a Quality set. But I don't believe you get much, in a 50" Flat screen, for $300.

ANYONE WANT A GREAT DEAL ON A SLIGHTLY USED PROJECTION SET, <53"> ?

Man I hate threads like these. Still sitting on my 32" Sony HD WEGA from 2002. I do not watch TV much and the HD stuff I could care less about. 157 lbs of lead-lined CRT 1080i badass! Just kidding of course. But I was able to adapt the DVI to HDMI to connect to my newer DVD player and was considering getting a Roku 3 to "upgrade" it for the internet TV stuff. Haha. I paid $1800 to Circuit City and had to get a loan for it all those years ago. Man have times changed!

I would totally ditch that TV and get a new one for the price. As much as I hate to admit it, if mine ever goes south I will not even think of trying to fix it.

Just picked up a 50" led tv from walmart for $218, the picture looks great and works for me.

A lot of hate here on Walmart TV's, but I've had as good of an experience as you can get with them. I put their $400 50" TV on my patio and watched World Cup games in the 95 heat (my cable box actually shut off due to over heating), then I watched Auburn and Panthers games out there in 30 degree cold. It's crystal clear, no issues.

My dad picked up the $200 Black Friday 50" LED from Walmart and it has been just fine. Plus, the fact that it's 1/2" thick and weighs like 45lbs is a monster bonus over the 3 feet thick 185lb projector models.

I have a buddy that bought a cheap Walmart LCD 5 yrs ago for $300ish and just recently the pixels have started dying. I bought my 40" JVC LCD on closeout from Best Buy in 2006 for $1300. The screen has been slowly dying for the last 3-4 yrs but I can' bring myself to replace it yet because I know that every year those monster 60"+ TVs get a little cheaper...
