is propane street legal in NC?

i plan on building a 351 to run propane but that was after i was done with most everything and i can afford a rebuild. to yall would it be worth it to go ahead and throw a propane system on my 302 and just fiddle with the timing to get it to run right, and then later on build my 351 to run it?

That's exactly what I'm doing, just with Chevy parts... I've got my 305 now... '85 engine, bone stock other than an intake. The next engine I buy will be a crate 350, and throw some high compression pistons in it (I still don't buy the SS valve thing if the ignition curve is done right), and put all these components back on...

The nice thing about 'pane and the equipment is - it's tough to over"carb" it.. the propane flows at a rate dictated by the air requirements of the engine, so it's been explained to me... That, and there's only 2 circuits to adjust.. idle, and full power...

I'd love to find someone with a gas analyzer, might know where a shop is that has one, but I could probably get it close by smell.

As for the emissions equipment, I doubt you'd have to have it anymore, since it's there for gasoline engines... But I'm not 100% on that one.

I got some non s/s valves you can take a look at that I ran before moving to s/s.

I tune mine with a wideband o2, so I know the air/fuel is perfectly set. That exhaust burns hot.

Hey StudNuts, I am interested in seeing them, but, being so far away, how about posting some pics of them. Besides the valves, how did the valve seats look?

How was your ignition curve set / advance, as compared to stock?

I don't see how it can burn hotter, as 'pane has less BTU's than gas, unless the ignition timing and curve wasn't advanced, and therefore the burn is continuing when the exhaust valve opens, because of the slower burn of 'pane.. can the burn time really be THAT long?

Not to say in any way that it didn't happen to you, and many others, I just can't see why..

But heck, a set of stainless valves is only $40... cheap insurance.

Any idea where in Raleigh/cary to get propane where they will charge the road use tax? I'd like info on the conversion too. Got an '84 w/ a 22r. How does it do do off road? Do you ever stall out like with a carb?

We're not going propane to be environmentally friendly... :flipoff2:

It's better than EFI.

Properly tuned,... you will worry more about low RPM's and oil pressure than you will about stalling it out. NO Characteristics of a carb.
