Is the toyota carrier a weak link?

I want the toyota rear axle in my buggy to be as durable as reasonably possible. For those that don't know, I broke a rear axle and chipped a tooth on the ring gear last weekend. (pirate thread: http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=568888 ) I'm getting a new third and using the current one as a spare.

I'm thinking welded rear, mini-spool, and full spool. After reading around a few forums people keep saying the carrier breaks when you weld the rear spider gears. So that had me thinking full spool. However, those are said to be tough to install, perhaps beyond my current skill set. So then I thought mini-spool but that doesn't do much to help with the carrier.

So, if you wanted to make a tough toy rear which way would you go?

Isn't yours a Tacoma rear? First I've ever heard about the carrier being "weak", but I don't hang around the TTORA boards anymore...

Never had any problems from carriers breaking. Make sure to weld the side gears to the carrier when welding it up. Usually you take out the R and P before anything else...a rear shaft here and there though...My experience is with the 8" though...8.4"s Taco chuncks are seeming to be stronger though...good luck...

It's an IFS rear used in toy trucks from 86-95. If I know my toy rear axles, and it's possible that I don't, it goes like this.

* mini truck rear: 80-85
* IFS rear: 86-95 (about 3" wider than the mini rear)
* tacoma rear: 96-04 (about 3" wider than IFS rear)
Isn't the new taco rear changed again? I'm not sure but I think it's wider and the thirds got a bad reputation right after they were released.

(You're a toy guy, you probably knew that but I wrote it just in case. I've been looking at this stuff lately.)

i run a spool and 529's on a mini truck axle, haven't had any problems, and i flog it. if you want the spool set up, PM me, you can just bring me the third, be fairly inexpensive. And in my opinion the strongest the best would be a v6 3rd with a spool but mine is a 4cyl.

I think the Tacoma and IFS rears are the same width. Main difference that I know of is R+P size.

Also, how do you know you chipped a tooth at harlan? It could have already been like that (unless you had taken the 3rd out since you got the buggy). Did you find the broken tooth in the diff? If it wasn't there then the tooth was probably already chipped.

It's really just a guess that I broke it while I broke the rear axle. I know that Dave replaced the ring gear shortly before I bought it so it's not an old setup. I did find the chip of broken tooth and removed it from the housing.

The Taco/Tundra third is a significant step-up from the V6 8". Bigger ring gear and a truss between the bearing caps to reduce flex.

if they trust it enough for the Tundra to go 500k...

But yeah, finding a V6 third would be the best bet... You've got a decent amount of torque with the I-6, and the red labels grip...

Thanks for the tech. I've found a V6 third and I'm leaning toward a full spool and paying for the install.

Just an FYI, I run blue labels, for now.

Hey Woody, I wouldnt be worried about breaking the carrier really. Will pretty much summed up what I was going to say about the welded rear.

Justin ran welded 3rd's on the goldrunner and the rear held up fine for how well he flogged on that thing when it was under the GoldRunner and the KillerBee.

all i really every seem to break is the actually R&P. I have broken them with 4cly, V6, spooled, welded carrier, lockright combos. Some completely trashed...some semi chipped teeth.

My vote goes for the gears being the weak link.

(that is with 39.5 IROKS though....and i am fairly easy on my truck:shaking: )
