I was hoping and wishing I had an 8.25 under my XJ, but from the looks of this, it's a Dana 35. I just need someone else to confirm. It was a bit hard to snap a picture this morning. Used my iPhone which doesn't have flash. Hopefully this is clear enough. I don't see the flat lip/bevel on the bottom of the knuckle.

Front axle

Also, I wanted to confirm the front is a Dana 30 as well. I'm pretty sure it is as that's exactly what it looks like.

95% sure the rear is a 35

front is a 30

on the rear, is there a flat spot accross the bottom or is it rounded?

I didn't see the flat lip and the diff cover appears to be flush with the housing. I'm agreeing with you it's a 35 but I think I'm about 98% sure. :)

Thanks

30/35 combo!

Thanks!

At this point I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy lockers for the front and rear or maybe I should just find some new axles. My plans are to run 35/36x12.50 so I'm a little hesitant to purchase lockers if I'm going to end up breaking something. Of course, I guess I could just install them and if I break something, chock it up to a lesson learned. lol

Depends on how big a tire your going to run...

35's and under, there should be zero issues with the front 30... Just keep an eye on the axle shaft ujoints.

As for the 35, don't do anything to it.. Watch the scrap yards for an 8.25 or a 44 out of a cherokee, its a direct bolt in... I've won an 8.25 off of e-bay for $1.00 that was about a 30min drive for me, i've also purchased an 8.25 for $50.00 locally.. keep your eyes open.

you have a 35 rear/30 front

36" on the XJ...why so big? Didnt you just get into wheeling? Go with 31s on what you have and see what happens.
For 36", I wouls skip the 8.8 rear and go straight to 9" rear, HP44 front. Fro 36", you should also be looking at lots of lift, longarms....

I wheeled a lot as a teen, but just got back in it. I never had the cash flow to actually buy the stuff I wanted so I did all the shade tree tricks like adjusting torsion bars and putting in blocks and pucks. I want to do this one right, but I'm finding that money is still a limiting factor. lol So as much as I want the bigger tires I'm thinking I may have to shelf that idea and save up for it and do it the right way as you suggested.

The XJ currently has 33s on it and I wanted to go with 35/36. I've guessed that the lift is about 6.5" based on the clearance. I plan to do some measurements this weekend when I'm installing the new bumpers, winch, brake lines, and rock sliders. I think I'm gonna go ahead and lock the front too. Not sure on the rear yet, since so many recommend getting away from the dana 35.

I took it out for a test with the 33s on it and ended up sitting it on the differentials. That prompted my desire to go to the 35/36's to get a little more clearance. If I had just a inch or two more of clearance I probably could have made it out.
