I just cranked my 84 Toy w 82 22R motor for the first time in a month. I left it idling 15-20 mins or so to warm up and went back out to shut it off and the temp guage was all down. I felt the head barely warm, block was " toasty". I assume the thermostat is stuck and wonder if it got hot enough to blow the head gasket. The oilpan is not as hot as the block I can hold my hand on it. It usually reaches operating temp in 5 mins.

I would say with the air temp being as low as it is and how long it sat if the thermostat is stuck open ( which some are made to do ) and engine was just at idle with no load you probably dont have to worry about the head gasket. You could check the coolent hoses and see if there is any heat there or not but if you could put yor hand on the oil pan and head/block its just running cold due to no load and an extended cold soak. Just my thoughts.

The block, top rad. hose and the top of the radiator were burning HOT, the hose seemed like it was about to burst, the head, valve cover was barely warm . I'm hopeing the 32 y.o. temp sensor or guage is shot. It was at it's off position, oil pres. guage was good.

I wouldn't worry, I've left mine running with no fan in this cold weather before. Agree with Joe on this one

Thanks guys, I feel better about this. I had a thermostat fail to open on the original motor after leaving work 20some yrs ago on a hot afternoon and 5 mins later I noticed it spark knocking, looked down and the temp guage was buried in the red. That blew the head gasket or cracked the head on that motor. It's in my shed now. This time the motor was idling so if it was the stat, maybe it did'nt get too hot . I assume even if it stuck while idling the guage would read something more than all down.

Hell I drove mine an enjoyer year without a thermostat because the po had removed it. Finally when to change it because it wouldn't get hot in the winter and didn't find one in there.

I drove mine on the interstate for about 5 miles with NO coolant after a heater line blew. I was 5 miles from my office. It was spark knocking pretty bad when it limped into its parking spot. Let it sit all day while I was working, went to NAPA and got some parts after work. Drove the dog$h!+ out of it on the way home. It ran perfectly.

One time my motor overheated cause the tstat stuck 3hrs from home and at 11pm, for a quick fix i found a washer in my toolbox the right outer dia. Threw it in and its still in there 5years later and runs about 170* by a summit temp gauge

Just got around to messing w it. Thermosatat opened right up in boiling water, radiator tubes/fluid looks good from the top, no leaks anywhere. Radiator cap blew all over on opening so I got a new cap and now I'm thinking the sending unit is bad? It is original 82 vintage, gauge is 84.
