Like many others on this board, I started out by hitting the powerline trails in my early days. Was it OK? Prob. not. Out of the many, many times I've been caught, was I ever given a ticket? No. But, I did mark that place as somewhere not to go in the future. If its not posted, all anyone can really do is ask you to leave. If you refuse, then you can get a trespass ticket or even locked up.
My point is, if someone is close by, there is no reason why someone couldn't help this guy out. You may be pushing your luck, but most people (officers/landowners) are reasonable and can acknowledge that you are there to help out, if done in a responsible manner.
Someone help the guy out and teach him, don't leave him out to dry and bash the crap out of him. Not everyone knows everything from the start, so teach him.
