Is this cherokee worth it?

also if he ha the vac. engaged 4x4, the front drive shaft should not be spinning anyway in 2wd which would eliminate the front shaft. If you want to know for sure remove the front driveshaft and drive in 2wd see if it still makes noise or vibration. If it fixes the problem then driveshaft is the problem, if not look else where, besides alignment on the front of a cherokee is only toe in, its straight axle, how you gonna adjust the caster camber on the straight axle with factory uppers and lowers?

Maybe I need to give y'all some more info. The Jeep is completely stock. The alignment is off pretty bad I mean as soon as I let go of the steering wheel for a second it pulls to the right pretty badly. I don't know if this will help any but there's a popping noise when i'm driving it but it's only at low speeds and it mostly does it when i'm coming to a stop. I'm taking it tomorrow to have it aligned and i'm gonna have them check to see if one of my tires isn't balanced correctly. Also, i've seen that some of you have mentioned running a heavier oil. What should I run?

caliper dragging causing the "alignment" to seem off?

Popping noise at low speeds/stop is almost certainly the hub.

Dead right on the disconnect axle thing, I should revise my statement. I didn't mean to suggest it was the DS u-joints causing the problem...

99.9% of the causes of death wobble on a cherokee will be FOUND by doing a proper alignment and tire balance. Blown TREs, bad CA bushings or flex joints, a toasted wheelbearing or bad balljoint will all be easy to find when you go to do an alignment (or take it to a shop).

For someone that doesn't know how to jack up the front end and check all those parts, my standard advice is to go get an alignment/balance done- its usually around $50. Any reputable shop wouldn't just set the toe and and send you on your merry way with a crispy unit hub, that's dangerous.

It does sound like the wheelbearing though, esp since everything is stock.

Add to this list the condition of the upper track bar mount. The bolt can loosen and/or the hole can become wallowed out.

I bought my 96 xj for 400 bucks with 170 thousand, because the lady thought that the motor was going to throw a rod. It had a noise coming from the back bottom of the engine. It was a rattle, if you touched the trottle it went away. I bought it, took it home, tightened four bolts on the fly wheel, that weren't really loose any way. It purrs like a kitten! Haven't had any promblems since.

That is my Q 2. CV Joint? U-joints up front. Solid axle. I thought CV Joints are found on FWD and IFS front ends.
From experience I know when a front u-joint goes, it feels like it is in 4 wheel drive in a parking lot turn. Done them twice in my XY. Wheel bearings once in 167K miles.

engine noise could also be a piston slap.. with the amount of mileage on it and with the winter season in tow....does it smoke at all???

Already addressed, the 2 u-joints back (double cardan) to back that's on the front DRIVESHAFT not the axleshafts- is frequently referred to as a cv.

As for the difference, it has nothing to do with AWD, solid axle or not. They are simply ways of force transmission with u-joints being slightly more durable but not operating at angles as severe as cv-joints. You're more likely to find CVs in IFS truck axleshafts and cars in general than solid axle trucks, yes. But you'll find both all over (not just in cars/trucks and not just in axles).

Oh, and I wanna say early XJs with the 207 case came with a TRUE cv joint front driveshaft, not just the double cardan u-joints. So there would be an example where you could talk about the cv joint on your solid axle cherokee and be 100% correct.

I put a motor in my Xj for $200. We did it in a day so i would be all over that deal. The shake doesn't sound bad. Could just be some worn out parts. rotate the tires and see if that helps. Check alignment too.

I found my jeep that way, a lil love it'll be worth it!!! Maybe alot of love it'll still be worth it!!...

BUY IT!! you cant loose on it . It sounds like you may have a grand in it probably less and it will run a lot more miles trouble free its a 4.0 they can go a easy 250 to 275K and my XJ had the same sound when you listen to it from under the hood and after crawling under it it was only the plate that covers the converter CHEAP FIX!
