It's not a bug, it's a feature

And in other News, A riot ensued in L.A. at a local Ferd dealer over the last Excusons on the lot.

I had just read about that, seems the method of soot reduction is to BURN it out every so often, looks like they got a little carried away

THe new exhaust systems are pretty complex from the sounds of it, GM is having issues with thiers also

some sort of particulate filter in the exhaust, IIRC

Right, and it has to be cleaned periodically, and they burn it off to do the cleaning. this is where the flames are coming from.

THe burning will / can get so hot that it will melt asphalt,

look at that video again, notice the tips of the exhaust, the little scoops near the tips are to draw air in to help cool the exhaust before it exits.

The new exhaust systems are going to be a pain in the ass, gonnna be a trick to modify those and stay legal.

We have a new 3500 Dodge Chasis Cab at work with the new 6.7 Cummins. It also has the particulate filter. When it is cleaning itself, a light will come on to let you know. If you walk past the exhaust when this is going on, it is warm, but not bad enough that you cant stand there. Actually its nice when its cold outside....

6000 miles now, and the inside of the exhaust pipe is still silver, and it hasnt been unhooked from a trailer since the day we got it.......no soot at all

wow, I can see a lot of fires being started because of something like that. Not to mention burned people!

thats a nice lil patented feature ;)
You wont see it on fords, chevys or cats for at least 3 years. I'm sure they will come out with something similar.

I havent touched this, but have read the interoffices on it, so if I butcher this I apologize. Essentially there are directional louvers in the pipe, that allow the exhaust to suck in cool air about 3-4 feet before the tip, this cools the discharge significantly and helps keep the chrome purdys purdy

im thinking of buying a 6.7 cummins .. how does it compare to the 5.9 ... also did u get the new auto tranny

That thing didn't sound quite right..

Some people pay extra to have flamethrowers installed in their exhaust! :)

I agree with Rich - it sounded wierd. Maybe just a strange echo wherever they were taping it?

When I help out on my grandparents wheat farm, I was always told to be careful where I drove the trucks out in the fields when it was dry...as the exhaust could possibly start a fire and ruin the crop....visible flames out the exhaust would pose a HUGE threat to farmers crops!!

No we went with the 6 speed manual just for simplicitys sake. The truck has the best low end power i have ever felt in a stock truck. It has awesome power in 6th gear at 60 mph pulling 14,000lbs....feels like it could pass traffic without a downshift, and it holds its speed awesome up small hills with that same load. That being said, the topend power, say from 2300-3500 rpm seems to not be as strong as my 04.5 5.9. Part of that could be the lack of mileage on the truck when i last drove it, and the fact that it is a chasis cab model which has lower hp and torque than the 2500 and regular 3500 have.

I believe the Chassis cabs are rated at 305 hp and 610 torque

the regular pickup models get 350 hp and 650 torque

My bud who works for Ford said that the exhaust temp exiting the tip is around 500*C. He says they haven't sold any of the 10 new PSD's they have on the lot.

Here's info I found on one of the sites about this.

The “fix,” though, means that when the computer senses the filter overheating it will tell the truck to power down and drivers will have to pull over until it cools. That sounds mighty inconvenient to us.

there are lots of inconveniences about the new Fords, like for example they now come with an hour meter because if you run it harder than most (like a tow truck) it is suggested to change the oil ever 200 hours.

Dodge has had that, its in the 03 up mods...nice to have...

If Ford is just now coming out with an hour meter in the factory cluster, it's rather late in the game, GM has had them in ALL full size truck/SUV since 1999/2000 body (GMT800)

You just need to know how to find it! ( ignition off, hold trip reset button for 4 seconds)
