I'm looking at buying a 1973 J4000 for the axles to put under my XJ but I dont know what axles are under it? What did the 4000's come with from the factory? Woud anyone happen to know how wide these axles are? The truck is about 2 hours from me and I just figured I ask on here first to find out if it was worth going to look at.

From doing a yahoo search it somes with D44 front and rear and the front is closed knuck and drum brakes.

I would not use them. There is something out there much better for the same price. waggy axles 80-87 j20 axles. ford, chevy, dodge.
x2...but j20's front difs are also pass. drop pumpkin too. As are most chevy...i think...could be wrong about the chevy but most i've seen were pass. drop.

Stay away from the Closed Knuckled front. They Suck real bad.
I had them on my 64 J200 and the spindle bolt keeped striping out and leaving me on the side of the road (this happen 4times . also the seals on the closed knuckles really don't seal they just control the amount of lube that comes out.
